Turbo inspection

Hey all,

I've been trying to troubleshoot my 2007 E450 for quite awhile. It has had turbo related issues since I bought it. I'm wondering if I can inspect the turbo blades without taking it out of the doghouse??
Thanks for the help!!

No but since you have a 6.0 you probably have a rusted or sooted up Unision ring....So you need t pull the Turbo and check it out...I would buy a good used Turbo and just swap it out.... You have a VVT which means the Unison ring is the Variable Vane part....They tend to clog up or rust if you don't drive it enough OR idle it for a long time....

Thanks for the info, I purchased it about 7 months ago with 120k on it and already put almost 15k on the engine with no idling, although it's a retired transit bus.

Another weird thing happened to it the other day. It was making a noise like it was overheating, but no temp change or steam escaping, but after I got home and it cooled down, it leaked most of the coolant out. I traced it down to a " blown" hose near the water pump, smaller than a radiator hose..
Trying to remove the hose now..

I would install a coolant filter ASAP.....6.0's are notorious for having crap in the block left over from casting......also consider Bulletproofing it .....BulletProofDiesel - Darn-Near Bullet Proof Diesel Products for your 6.0 and 6.4
coolant filter is important....

As 'blageurt' relayed, the 6.0 forum on this site (under Diesels) is a wealth of information. Some of the common recommendations for this motor are as mentioned, a coolant filter, and a must-have is an engine monitor to watch your oil and coolant temperatures. I like the ScanGauge II for its simplicity and a multitude of engine parameters is can display. Others that are whizs with their smart phones use software on them that do the same thing.
Oh, if your vehicle is still using Ford Gold coolant, dump it and go with a Cat EC-1 rated coolant (Fords' goop will plug your oil cooler over time because of silicates that come out of suspension under high heat). I've only scratched the surface, but this is a great engine (and you need to understand its nuances to keep it trouble-free).
Another great resource is 'Diesel Tech Ron' on YouTube, and he has a video on removing the turbo from a van through the doghouse.
