I phoned a firend of my Dad's about 4 weeks ago about an engine in a '46 Ford two ton. He said it was his brother inlaws truck and he will ask. Three weeks later he says I can have the engine. Pull the truck home remove the engine and dissasemble almost all of it. Pull the truck back. Get a phone call from supposidly the owner saying what we were doing. He said he was not contacted but wants $75 for the engine. Phone my Dad's friend again he said he phoned his brother inlaw he said it was his truck. It was a different brother inlaw the phoned earlier. He is now sorting it out. The engine might not even be useable and I don't really want to pay $75 for it. Thoughts anyone?

Hmmm.. I think the person who said you could have the motor should pay the 75.00
I have a feeling though you will end up with the bill.

I'd do whatever you can to see if it's usable while you have it in your posession. That is, short of tearing it totally apart or damaging it (any more than it may be). At least you'll know whether it's worth the $75 or not to you.

The other option is to let them have it back. Tell them you are so sorry about the mistake and want to make everything right. The engine has been handled very carefully, and they can come and get it any time they want if they just call to make sure you're home, etc.

I bet you'll find Mr. brother-in-law wants to come and retreive his engine about as much as he'd like to mow all the neighborhood grass for a summer. You might be surprised at how much the price will come down if he has to come and get it himself. At least in Ohio, you are not obligated to physically return the item, you just have to make it readily available for the owner to retrieve. Don't know how things are in Canada.

All that is in the block is the valves, camshaft and crank. I've removed everything else. There is only one useable piston left and the crank is only in the block because I have nowhere else to store it. I should give him $35 since most of the outer parts are useable except one head.
