In need of knowledge.........I have a 98 ranger, 2w, 2.5L and am having trouble with idle at start up........It starts fine then boggs down terrible, to a point of stalling at times... most noticable on cold starts.once it is running for a while it seems to be much better. It also acts up at times under low idle, at a light or stop sign.
It has month old plugs.....I changed the egr valve, throttle air bypass and plug wires. Also had the coils tested and they are fine. Changed the feul filter and used some fuel system cleaner and still not improved........Anyone have any ideas or ways i could get further diagnosis.......it is not showing the check engine light.
Well, I wasn't having idle problem when stopped at lights, but my 2.3L (virtually the same engine as yours) was bogging down close to dying when I started it for the first time in the day. It was fluctuating while idling like up down up down and sometimes died. It was also a little sluggish while driving it. I did everything you did and more (long story) but what ending up fixing the problem was the O2 sensor. My truck runs like a new one now. It's really amazing that that little device was causing so much problems. I also noticed that the idle is smoother all the time now as well. I hope this helps.
P.S. My check engine light never came on either. It also passed a KOEO and KOER test with no errors or stored codes.
