. . have gone with Tractor Supply Brand due to low price and ease of getting it. However, I've had problems with the lid on both the last two I purchased. Thinking of getting something a little better quality but don't want to drop $500+.
Anyone with good recommendation for a good, sturdy, reliable, not break the bank truck box?
You can always try Craigslist for cheaper, but I love my Weather Guard box. Not sure if it's in that break the bank class for you, as I got it cheap used. But I guess it's up to you if you want to just buy new or deal with online classifieds.

Yeah, $700 or so for a Weather Guard is a little more than I want to put into a truck box. They look great and apparently function well. I can afford it but I don't want to put that much into it.
I've found that the cheap ones are just that. They do the job but can be a pain when they don't latch properly and etc. I found a used weather guard on CL for $300. Even if you went and bought a new one, you can move it from this truck to your next new truck in however many years. My buddy has had the same weather guard for over 20 years and it still works great, we work construction and he uses the snot out of it.
The only thing to consider is they sit at least 6" high on the bed rail, so if you have or thinking of getting a fifth wheel, you'd need to be mindful of that.
UWS makes the best truck boxes on the market. It's been about 13 years since I bought one, but it's still going strong on my buddies truck (my current truck is a flare side and it wouldn't fit). If I remember correctly I paid $400 - $500 for it in '04.
I've had weather guards but I've had a pro tech now for a couple years. I have the low profile one and really like it. Very strong. Out of the two I think the pro tech takes my vote. Just barely
I just picked up a "Husky" low profile Black Aluminum truck box from Home Depot tonight. It only sticks up a couple of inches above the bed rails so visibility is good. The quality seems good enough and it is sturdy. $299.
Tractor Supply has Weather Guards marked down every so often. I love mine and I paired it with a strip of LED lights under the top when I need to see at night.
You can keep spending $300-400 everytime you replace you truck, and have the box only function properly for a few years. Or, you could go Wearherguard and have the box function for your next 3-4 trucks, if not more. That Weatherguard will pay for itself in a matter of a couple of years. Also, their latches are the easiest to use of any out there. Especially when you're hands are full. I find myself with grease and **** on my hands all the time, and I just smack the latch and it's open. No slipping, not having trouble opening when hands are full, etc. You've spent this much on a truck, why cheap out now?
