So yesterday i installed a new distributor, and the truck runs much better now, with no pre ignition, but when I was setting the timing I realized there's a good chance I'm not reading this timing pointer correctly. Which spot is the correct place to read from, the orange, pink or green? I realize this is a pretty stupid question.....
Is the stock location for alternator? Did this truck get the alternator mod?
It looks like it is mounted where the air pump would go - and it should be in the upper location on that bracket (heater hose would, of course, not be coming out of bracket hole).
I don't know - I haven't seen everything.
I don't know if this was the stock location, but I have always thought it was. It does have a 3G alternator on there. It's a pain though having that alternator there, maybe the bracket in my March kit that just came in will move it
After looking at it, I believe it is the correct spot, there's still room for the smog pump to be mounted above it
I'll have to get creative then, there's no physical way for me to get a view on that point on the marker. I've got some engine issues also then, if I adjust my timing off that point than I don't think my motors even gonna run
Just count the number of degrees from the correct marker to the location you can see. It looks "about" 15 degrees difference from your orange line to the correct place (the yellow line). You need to confirm but setting timing mark at TDC aligned to yellow edge (with engine OFF) and see what the damper marks show at the Orange location.
So if the timing is set to 0 degrees at the correct pointer (yellow line) you would be seeing 15 degrees at the orange line with your timing light. If you want to set timing to 10 degrees - then using the Orange location/pointer you would set it at 25 degrees.
I thought of that too when I started to think about it. Now to figure out how to make the motor run, since apparently it really likes 40 degrees initial
