Help/Advice

Welp, having an issue with my truck. Seeking advice on what my options are and how best (economically) to proceed.

My truck has started blowing black smoke on hard acceleration. From a standstill, or also while moving if I mash the pedal or the tranny downshifts to power up.

Also have started to get a lot worse fuel economy.

I thought that maybe the EGR was dirty, so I pulled it. It was a bit sooty but nothing like photos I have seen of others dirty EGR valves. I cleaned it and re-installed it. Really didn't notice any difference.

I took the truck today to Diesel Daydreams here in Denver. $68 bucks later, they told me my passenger side up pipe bellow is damaged and leaking. They tell me thats the whistling sound I can hear (hell, I thought that whistle was normal) and that it may be my entire problem, at the very least, that its a big contributor to the fuel economy drop and the smoke on hard acceleration.

They have quoted me 5 hours labor. Add parts and they are quoting me just a hair over $1,300 for the work.

My questions are:

1. Would/could a leaking passenger side up pipe bellow cause my symptoms?

2. Is 5 hours labor appropriate for this repair?

3. Do both up pipes have to be replaced, or could I just have the passenger side done?

4. Does the turbo have to be removed for this repair?

5. How difficult would it be to remove and replace the damaged passenger up pipe myself, with no access to special tools. Other than simple ratchets/sockets etc., anything I need I'd have to go get from like, harbor freight. I live in a condo, so I cannot jack up the truck etc. to work on it.

I just recently moved here and don't have a job yet. I must carefully manage my expenses at present. Money is tight.

Thank you all for your input.

What they found will definitely do what you are describing the turbo needs the exhaust pressure to spin the turbo. You can do it yourself if your can turn wrenches and you would only need to do the side that's leaking. 5hours is reasonable since the bolts to the manifold could be seized and yes the turbo comes out.

Is there a PDF file or detailed write up on removing the turbo I can be directed to? I just tried to search for turbo removal but keep getting an error in response.

Look up dieseltechron or srmastertech on YouTube they have very detailed videos of common repairs to the 6.0L. And for this job you only need basic tools. You should be able to see if one or both bellows are leaking as there will be black soot in the general area of the leak. I would also get it scanned for codes, you can have pending codes without a check engine light.

There are a couple of other things you should do is verify the MAP sensor hose is not cracked and the brass nipple on the passenger side of the intake manifold is not plugged, the MAP sensor is mounted to the evaporator housing on the passenger side and is connected to the passenger side of the intake manifold via a rubber hose.
Also verify the EBP sensor tube is clear, the EBP sensor on an 05 and up superduty is located just below the FICM and is connected to the front of the drivers side exhaust manifold via a steel tube, remove the EBP sensor and pass a stiff piece of weed whacker line down through the tube and into the exhaust manifold to ensure that it is clear.
