Engine failure - at 418,000 miles

I'm currently developing my game plan for selling my 7.3 and moving into something like a 2011 with the 6.2. Having lived in the 7.3 forum the past 10+ years, 400K on a diesel will defintely include more than what Ed's engine has required (I don't know of any exceptions)!! My own 7.3 is sitting at 293K right now and has seen two starters, an oil cooler rebuild, an alternator, glow plugs, PS hoses, brake master cylinder, brake booster, fuel pump, EBPV rebuild/replacement on turbo glow plugs, injector o-rings, high pressure oil pump lines, two CPS's, IPR sensor, fuel bowl rebuild, water pump and thermostat, two accelerator pedal assemblies, two sets of ball joints, one set of front tie-rods, two center carrier bearings, two sets of drive shaft u-joints, and two rear brake caliper failures. All of my failure parts have typically been in spite of my rigorously proactive PM efforts and at longer intervals than most of what else I've seen in the 7.3 forum. With all of that, I'm still running on the original turbo, injectors, high pressure oil pump, steering box, 4R100 transmission, rear end, A/C compressor, and PS pump.
Good to see another 7.3 guy moving over I was in the same boat and I am really happy with my decision. Love the 6.2 and its specs out real close in HP/TQ numbers to the 7.3...I do miss the turbo whistle though .....

I have dearly enjoyed the maintenance efforts on my 7.3, as it has really been very good to me overall. Most of the repair activities have been in splurges, so it has not really been a regular diet of grease-stained hands for the most part. I'm just tired of the noise levels, even though I like the exterior sound of the 7.3 over any other diesel I've heard... I'm just getting old and want my wife to not feel a need to avoid riding with me in the truck because "we can't easily carry a conversation due to the cab noise" -- and no amount of FatMat will be adequate, in my mind.
As for turbo whistle... I never really had it until about 3 years ago. My donut gaskets on the up pipes were shot, so I could not build enough boost to get a true whistle or whine, even though I'm running a mild chip/flash on the PCM. Once I installed the bellowed up pipes and sealed the turbo, I was absolutely SHOCKED when it started screaming on hard accelerations! I don't even like it now when I hear it starting to whine at just the slightest acceleration, though I do smile at the fact that it tells me it is still sealed and raring to go. Now, especially after getting used to my wife's Lexus RX450h, I have a renewed appreciation (and desire) for a quiet and peaceful ride!
It is SO good to see the longevity reports on the 6.2, and I'm sorely tempted to try hard to justify not waiting two years to make the jump (trying to save up for the cash difference and let the prices drop a bit more).

I'm right there with you guys. My 7.3 is for sale and I'm totally enamored with this new rig and the 6.2. The quiet after 15 years of rattle is nice. Like you guys I've done a lot of maintenance repairs to the truck over the years and it's not cheap no matter what anyone says. I can't even imagine having a 6.7.
I think the only thing I'll miss is the when going up a grade is hearing the turbo spool up and the truck just goes without down shifting. On the other hand the sound of a V8 turning a few rpms is not bad although you don't hear much in these new cabs.

I work for a municipality in N. Texas and our fleet maintenance group cares for over 1000 trucks between many cities. They showed me their maintenance records for the 6.2 compared to the newer diesels of every brand and its hands down night and day. they have almost zero failure/repair rate for the drive train in the Ford 6.2...cant say the same for the diesels. As much of a 7.3 fan, and diesel fan, as I am I could not justify a 6.7 (dont tow heavy) and really was not jazzed about the new diesel experience (DEF, Regen etc etc). knowing we have a proven power train with countless work hours under it between gov't, construction landscape crews etc gives a lot of piece of mind.
IMO anyway

I'm also looking at getting a 6.2 in about 1-2 years. The new diesels are powerful, but I can't justify the extra cost when the 6.2 makes good power. It would tow our TT just fine. And a quite ride on family trips would be nice too. After 10 years I do still love the sound of the 7.3 and plan on keeping it.

Coming from a 7.3 as well. Owned a 92 supercab cab for over 22 years. Researched the new diesels for a couple of years and decided I wasn't going to pay $1000. ea. for a new injector. Ordered a brand new 2014 F250 with the 6.2 and have absolutely no regrets. My old 92 7.3 was running fine (182K), just the rest of the truck was falling apart

Ed, thanks for posting this. Was linked to this page from another thread by another forum member. I found a 2011 utility body truck with the 6.2L engine for sale on Craigslist that had 336k miles and thought I was seeing one of the highest mileage 6.2's out there. Guess I was wrong.
Amazing longevity, Ford really has a good motor on their hands with this one.
Interestingly, I had two 6.2L trucks and both made a little rattle at startup. The 2012 truck was quite loud and sounded like garbage for about 2 seconds until oil pressure came up. The 2015 truck was quieter but still did it. I never liked that. I just assumed depending upon the position of the cams when the engine shut off, some oil was being squeezed from the mini-lifters on the ends of the rockers.

Absolutely loved our 7.3L truck. In February, I sold it with 195,000 miles on the odometer. She quit on me once when the fuel pump failed. Other than that, she has been problem free. We're getting back into showing and I wanted something newer for hauling the horses to Florida and/or Kentucky. The new 6.2L hauls as well, if not better than our 2001 7.3L. Very happy with the new truck.

Certainly can't really argue how great the 6.2 is but they do have their warts. I've replaced both exhaust manifolds in 8 months @ $2200+. The last one last month. 2011 with 55k miles. Apparently not uncommon based on comments from the Service Advisors.
Still wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

Couple rusted studs which could possibly cracked the manifolds? Other than that the engine has been flawless.
