Non-RVer question for you guys. My RV is 30 amp, rather than 50 amp. Are both receptacles typically available on the poles at each site, or would I need to specify 30 amp?

 

Normally.... you would get a 30 amp then pay a little extra for a 50 amp site as they are the large Rv and need a larger site. But I always ask when booking or checking around.

I've always found that if the site is 50A, there will generally be a 20 and 30 amp outlet also. Granted it's not a hard and fast rule. Best bet is buy a 50 to 30 adapter and never worry about it.

 

Thanks guys. I had considered buying the 50-30 adapter, but was concerned about pulling too hard on one pole. Wasn't sure if the 50's were actually 50 per pole, or 50 total - meaning 25 per pole.

 

The 50's are 50 per leg for 100 total. That said, Scott's experience has been mine as well. I've never seen a 50a site without a 20a and 30a on the same service.

50A is 2 110v 50A legs. Which means a total of 100A available. You'll be able to pull less than the pole is capable of. Your main breaker in the trailer would trip first. Adapters really are a must. You just never know. I run off a 50-30 quite a bit both at home and in cooler months when both a.c. units aren't a necessity. Especially at campgrounds that have an upcharge for 50a.

 

I'll get the adapter to have around for instances where all three may not be on one site.
As far as pulling on the pole, I'll leave that to my co-driver.

 

It never hurts to have as many adapters and dog bones as possible Doug. I've got them in about every flavor imaginable even though most, I've never used. My most recent one is a cheater that pulls from 2 30a plugs to feed one 50a. I can also adapt it down to pull from two 20a as long as they aren't GFCI.

 

Having all flavors of adapters is a must. You'll never need them if you have them. When I was in the east alot of the older parks only had 30a service and more than one the power pole was further away than my 50a cord would reach (30') which is why I carry a 25' 30a cord besides the HD 20a cord. Never had to worry about distance to power poles.

 

I made the mistake of selling my 30a cord when I got my first 50a rv. Being too stubborn to buy another on principle, I bought adapters to step my 50a extension down to 30 and 20 at both ends if necessary. Your right though Jim, if you have em' all, you never seem to need em'....

 

We got a 50 amp extension cord and all adapters down to 15. Less line loss on long run

 

That's how I justified my mistake Dave. It was, as Bob Ross used to call it, a "Happy Little Accident..."

 

I think what happens for folks that rv is they think because your rig is set up for 50a service you have to have 50a service where 30a or an 15/20a cord will power some of the components in the rig just knowing what you can run on what service is key.

 

Jodi and I are booked for site 77, from June 24, through the 29th at Mammoth.

 

We are also now booked at Mammoth from June 24-29. We're reserved on a Premium 50A site, but she didn't give me a site number yet.... Hopefully they can keep us all somewhat close together.
