I have a 1976 f150 that I recently put the body back on the frame.
The solenoid won't engage to bring power to the starter motor and I replaced the solenoid and still doesn't work.
I have power to the small black wire (middle right of solenoid) when the key is in the "Run" position and power on the small red wire (middle left of solenoid) when the key is in the "start" position. But I still can't get power going to the starter wire !?!
"S" would be for the start position of the key and "I" bypasses the ballast resistor. It sounds like you have it right from your description but left and right depend on point of view. If your left and right are from looking across the engine and not from over the fender, you have it right. You can jump the big terminal from the battery directly to the small terminal next to it and it should pull in.
Also, the solenoid must be grounded, usually through it's mounting bolts to the inner fender.
