Ambient air temp sensor question

I drive an '08 F250 6.4 King Ranch with the lariet trim package and every option in the manual. This includes the smart electronic climate control. The past couple of days it has been 90°F after work. When I get on my truck with the inside temp set to 65° and hit the auto button, I am not getting very cold air. I have noticed that the truck is reading 55+60 outside. When I start driving, it slowly climbs to whatever it is outside, at which point I get cold air. It also does not give me cold air on manual mode until the outside air temp is right. I know the answer is to replace the ambient air sensor, but I am just wondering if anyone knows exactly how the computer prevents me from getting cold air. Dampers? Ac compressor off? Ideas?

I agree the incorrect ambient air sensor reading is delaying the operation of the AC compressor. I guess they figure as a fuel saving feature when it's only 55-60 outside the vents will cool down the cab without the need to run the compressor.
