I would stick with that size. It's a popular size that retains an e load rating and 80psi capability.
Sorry to hear about the grapplers, a lot of people love them and a lot of people hate them. No real middle ground there. Can I ask how they wore? Even, or edges/center, chopped up? I thought the g2's had a mileage warranty.
The newer bfg tako2 in a 35 inch tire are actually 34 inches tall. They are a good all-terrain tire that have no road noise. All these tires dont last for poo. Wait just realized you said 9 inch wide rim. Mine is a 10 inch wide rim that stretches the tire to where its not a true 35 inch. A 35 inch tire on a 9 inch wide rim would be closer to 35 inches.
It probably depends on your wheel offset more than anything. I ran 35x12.50x20 Toyo MT's on my truck when it was stock. They rubbed on the radius arms, just like my current 37's.
As far as tires, I have been real happy with my Toyo RT (I siped them myself). I have had them in mud, sand, snow, rain and plenty of towing miles. They currently have about 38k miles on them. I pulled this one off a couple weeks ago for a flat repair. It has almost as much tread left as the factory spare that has no mileage on it.
I would stay with 295/70/18. I am going back to that size at some point this year. I feel it offers the most size with the heaviest load rating that will not rub stock trucks and have a lesser impact on mpgs vs 35x12.50's. They also weigh less than 35x12.50's. Cooper AT3 or if you don't want an aggressive tire the Michelin Defender LTX is what I will most liikely go back to.
Update... bought 295/70/18 Michelin Defender LTX. Getting them installed tonight, will post pics. Got them at Costco for $1080 out the door.
These should be much quieter than the Grapplers and I'm really looking forward to it!!
My truck has 238k miles on it... probably last set of tires it will see! She is getting demoted to truck duties/backup vehicle soon, so miles won't be adding up.
