Hey folks, I'm new to the 4th gen trucks and have a newbie question I've seen two different style instrument clusters on 66 models. One had the big round speedo and the other a sweep type. What designates the type used?
Custom Cabs use the sweep speedo and standard cabs had the big old round job. I believe the 4x4 might have all had a round speedo but I am not the go to guy for 4x4 stuff
Thanks fellas. That's interesting because I'm looking at one that has custom cab on the door handle but has round Tac and is a 4x4. Doesn't appear to be multiple years. I'll have to get a look at the vin tag. His Vin number appears to be correct.
What are some of the other indicators of a custom cab for a 66?
Back in those days the buyer could pretty much have it built the way they wanted. At least to a certain extent. And at least in 65'. It could be a custom cab and have either speedo, depending on the buyers preference. They offered the new sweep style in 65' CCs but buyers could opt out from the old style round one. I knew the OP of a 65' CC which I now own and he hated the new sweep style and opted for the round one. Not sure if you still had that option in 66' but I'm sure Bill (ND) would know for sure.
The 65' CC I have was also painted a none standard color, but don't think it had to be a CC to have it painted a non standard color. Also don't know what year they discontinued that option. Again, pretty sure Bill would know the answer to that.
I'd ask him but I don't think he's talking to me for some reason. I've tried to contact him a few times over the past couple years but no joy. Hummm.
Yeah, as I read more and more threads there seems to be more of that than I realized. Also taking into consideration how people over the years tend to replace a part with the next most available compatible part rather than replace exact part.
Just found one of ND's post concerning the clusters. Seems the 66 f250 4x4 came with round.

Nope.
"Custom Cab Sweep Speedo: 1965/66 F100/250 2WD & 1966 F100 4WD only. Use with plastic chrome instrument cluster bezel (C5TZ-10838-A).
1965 F100/250 4WD, 1966 F250 4WD, 1965/66 F350/1100 Custom Cabs have a round speedo with a chrome steel instrument cluster."
1965/66 F100/250 2WD & 1966 F100 4WD Custom Cabs, 1965/66 F100/250 Rangers (all 2WD) came with the sweep speedometer chrome plastic instrument cluster bezel.
Also came with an anodized aluminum grille and tail lamp bezels, chrome horn ring, dual sun visors, plastic door trim panels and dual armrests, Custom Cab nameplates on the doors.
If Custom Cab door handle guards were factory installed, there were no optional factory installed Styleside body side mouldings.
Custom Cabs have crushed vinyl/woven plastic seat upholstery, Rangers came with bucket seats.

Interesting so for 66 4x4 models) does that also include the "custom Cab" badge I've seen on the doors? That would seem to be over kill to have both door guards and door badging. So was the door guard in lieu of door badging an option or am I bunching different years together?
Read back over what ND posted. Your answer is there - sometimes it's hard to understand at first. The OP of my 65 CC, wanted the round speedo rather than the sweep. When that option was picked,,, it came with the CHROME bezel, as ND explained. The OP also ordered the optional
Fuel, temp, oil pressure, alt GAUGES that surround the speedo, under the glass. Gauges, not idiot lights. I believe the larger trucks came standard with those type gauge clusters - ND as well as others here on this board should know. Back then, they paid more attention to what the buyer wanted. Go figure.
The OP also wanted to add the CC hand guards, 'even though' it had the CC badging. I removed the hand guards when I got. Just looked to busy for me.
