hello- So i finally am driving my 71 f-100 4x4 which had power steering when i bought it. it has 33's and a steering stabilizer as well.... Im surprised to find the amount of wander the truck has while at cruising speeds... is there any way to tighten it up or is it just what is "normal" with this old iron. thank you!
Check all the front end bushings and the rag joint for play first. The steering box has a backlash screw on the top that may need adjusting. If it's too tight the wheel won't return to the straight position.
More then likely it's time to rebuild the whole front rubber cushions an bushing along with all long with the tie rod ends, drag-link an steering shaft & u-joints.
An it could be as simple as it just needing the wheel bearing tighten up.
Jack up the front end wheels off the ground an rock the tires up & down from 12:0clock & 6:0 clock for play, also at 9 & 3:0clock for any play if any found then find where it at an replace parts as needed.
But 4wd front axles our like a can of worms and can cost a bunch as these trucks are much older then the owners.

P/S has been swapped in, as F100/250 4WD's were not available with P/S until 1973.
The question is, which type of P/S was swapped?
1973/75 F100 4WD & 1975 F150 4WD came with Garrison Power Assist P/S. Has a control valve and hydraulic ram cylinder.
The M/S gearbox is used, because it has nothing to do with the Power Assist P/S system.
There in no rag joint, the multi-piece lower steering shaft and coupler (includes a u-joint) connects to the input shaft of the steering gearbox with a clamp and thru bolt.
1976/79 F100/150 4WD has Ford integral P/S, the one piece lower steering shaft and coupler connects to the input shaft of the steering gearbox with a rag joint.
ok, great intel!... so now that i took a look it appears the lower steering shaft is telescoping and has a u-joint up by the firewall and then clamps at the connections to the gearbox/steering column. The power steering pump pressure/return lines both feed into the gearbox itself and there is no assist ram or any external equipment.
