I'm one of the unfortunate ones that has to use the truck as a truck. I had to take that piece off. I see what you mean kdawg.
Not only is grit and stuff going to go on top of the plastic it is going to funnel itself under the lip of the tailgate and stay there.
I looked at cutting the plastic "thinner"...thats not happening. It's like a 1/4" too thick.
Mine is staying off..it sucks.
I would be the squeaky wheel at your dealership and get Ford involved kdawg. At least try and get them to paint that.
Someone has to show them that error, and you have the proof. There's no way they can say that's your fault for using the truck as a truck.
It needs to be redesigned.
Unfortunately you had to take the bullet.
Yeah, I think I will at least show them and see what they will do. I am not terribly hopeful but we will see I guess. The paint on these trucks is seriously disappointing. Mine chips if you look at it funny. Let alone if you trap dirt and pebbles against it.
Is that piece of plastic for any purpose other than a cover? I just looked at mine and it isn't readily visible.
That isn't the only poor design on the tailgate. If you have the tailgate step - the inside top edge of the tailgate (facing up when open) has a thin piece of plastic with an open slot running a long the face of the closed step. I recently had to work on it as hay and alfalfa had caught in the slot and jammed up enough to start pushing the plastic clips apart widening the slot. Took about 10 minutes with airhose to get the hay out to reattach the clips and close the gap up some.

Just a cover, I guess for looks, it does look better with it on but it's not a big deal, I definitely won't put it back on!
I was thinking that gap was looking a little wider on mine as well. Must have some dirt in there. They definitely missed the mark in a few aspects with the tailgate. It's all great until you start putting it to work. But I guess that is part of the risk when you buy the first year of a totally new truck, definitely some oversite from Ford either way.
My tailgate comes just even with the edge of the block off plate when it's open. Any dirt or stones on the block off plate would not hit my tailgate. F-250 XLT.
I'm putting the dually light bar on in it's place.

Interesting. On my truck the little stones even left a gouge in the plastic where a little stone got stuck between the tailgate and the plastic. I wonder what the difference is.

When you install the lights, report back if if the lights give even more clearance
Compare your light bar to the OP's picture. Is it the same shape?
Does it look like you would get the same result from grit landing on top?
I would rather buy the lights and put them in place of the plastic cover then have those scratches
The dually light bar is only 5/8" tall and the block off plate is 7/8" tall! I just measured mine. Tall meaning distance from the truck body.

Reason: Clarify measurement.
I've used these before on other pickups and plan on going with an LED light bar on this new SD. Will this cover the area where that plastic panel is?
Dan, I've always liked the look of those light bars and have gotten to the point of ordering one only to find the reviews of them to be horrible. People rate them terribly and say that the LEDs burn out prematurely.
I've never known anyone that had one that was of decent quality, so that's my question to you, has yours been reliable? If so what brand have you used and where did you get it? Thanks, Bob
does anyone have the P/N for the ford clearance lights (between the bumper and the tailgate)? I just realized mine wasn't manufactured w/ the 3 light / bar

I'm very sorry, I gave the wrong part #... The correct part# is; HC3Z-13A613-B
The light will need a wire/pigtail assembly wire up; 8U2Z-14S411-AAC...
