New starter screech

I installed a new denso starter which turns over much quicker but now I have a screech for about 3 seconds after it starts- any ideas? not looking forward to uninstalling it bc it's pretty heavy trying to hold in one hand and put the bolts in with the other. I used 5mm longer bolts than the original.

Went back this morning, tightened the bolts and it got rid of the problem on startup. Took her for a test drive and everything good until I backed into the drive way and the noise started again. Could the bolts back out just enough that quick? I planned on doing blue locktite today after I knew everything worked.

Blue loctite is actually a preventive maintenance task on the bolts that hold the starter in on these trucks. I have seen many posts about the bolts backing out.

If you don't mind me asking, is it a genuine Denso and if so where did you get it from? You can send the information in a PM if you don't want to post it on the public forum.

I recently had this same problem, mine might or might not do it when I started it, depended on how cold the engine was. As it warmed up it wouldn't, but putting it in reverse would do it depending on throttle position.

I tried two starters and they both did it, so for now the stock starter is back in it.

Which is the new one?
Is it possible that your bendix isn't backing out immediately at start up?

The Starter Rebuilder We use told us that most of the problems People have with Denso starters with these Trucks, is either China knock off or misapplication with the larger Denso units. The one He sold Us was the 2.5kw p/n 028000-5884/12v/09/29,it's not any heavier than OEM Mitsubishi.

You should hit up Corey at CNC and see if he has any further information on this noise. He is a good person to deal with and will tell you flat out if there is a problem.

Crop Harvester, I could be wrong, but I thought people have been installing these gear reduction Denso for years without problems. What does the 09 and 29 stand for in the starter description? Is the starter in the link the same one as you bought that works without noise?

I am keeping a close eye on this thread as I will be replacing my starter soon as preventive maintenance item.

Exact reason i wasn't willing to give up my OEM starter. Almost 2 years and still turning over strong. I will rebuild myself 95% of the time, The cost to do this was $1beer. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1339770-starter.html

I've been thinking about doing this as well. It will be 18 years old this summer. It's got to give up the ghost soon I'd think.

Sous You are correct,People have been installing these Denso starters for Years, including the truck on My Signature & several Harvesters & Our 5.7 GM in Our river jetboat, but just wanted to note that China Knock off's may not Yield the same results,& as I mentioned even though the much bigger Denso will bolt up to Our 7.3,its way overkill & could loosen up mounting bolts prematurely due to the overkill Torque,The larger unit seems to fit Our 2000lb Diesels in Our Harvesters better.

I took it off and put it right back on after I made sure nothing was in the way of seating it all the way. I used a 35 mm bolt up top and a 40mm bolt on the bottom both w loctite. No more noise. I will update if any further issues this week.

Are you SURE it is the starter squealing, not a BELT or alternator or something else?
