I would think the tranny problem is the fact they use the A4LD. Earlier trucks (like my '87 Bronco II for example) use the A4LD transmission. They're not as strong as others, as far as I know. My current A4LD is only 2 years old. Before I got my BII the previous owner had to get rid of the factory one and put in a new one. Since the A4LD is not the greatest transmission in the world, I'd guess that's prolly why, but I dunno...
Basically the A4LD is a POS. There is nothing good about it. However if you do buy an explorer that is an automatic, then you can get a different transmission from AA. There is a lot of work required to do this though, and a lot of money. I have a manual, it is a little better, but still very weak for a heavy vehicle like an explorer. Basically if you dont want to deal with the transmission, then you should get a V8 explorer. Their trannys are practically bullet proof.

I've been getting MANY responses that I should get a V8 Explorer, so that's what I'm aiming for. The whole thing with the V8, though, is insurance, but I'm sure the higher cost of insurance is not even close enough to match the better quality of the V8 Explorer and tranny...
Well... its not necissarily taht much better quality. If you plan on running larger tires, towing, wheeling. then it is gonna run the tranny down quicker. Basically you play you pay. Like I said though AA makes a better transmission but its gonna cost some money, or you can get a manual like me.

Planned uses... daily driving, hauling band equipment (which is a no problem thing for even an econo-car, the equipment isn't heavy at all, so an Explorer shouldn't have a problem, I do it in my BII all the time) and if I ever need a trailer to tow, it'd be for hauling more equipment that wouldn't fit in the Explorer, but chances are, I won't need the trailer. So basically it'd be fine.
So get a V6. It will work plenty good for what you are planning on doing. Just be sure and have the tranny flushed every 30k miles, and have the metal plugs put in.
