I have an Explorer '96 4.0 which recently started flashing the O/D light and the Check Engine light is on.
The code on the computer is 0743 (Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Electrical). The Trip counter and Odometer are working intermittently since the light came on but the Speedometer works fine. The transmission shifts perfectly and I have traveled about 300 miles since the problem started.
The car has had a turbine like noise comming from the Mass
Airflow sensor for a long time now, even before this light came on.
I had the oil in the tranmission changed to see if the failure goes away but no change yet.
This turbine noise, does it happen when the truck is at idle, and when it is warm? If so, you have to change Idle Air Control Valve, just had that done on my explorer, fixed the problem. Its located behind the throttle body on right side of the intake manifold, easy removal of 2 bolts.
There are many posts on the flashing OD light. I suggest you do a search on 'Flashing O/D light'. Does the transmission seem to shift a bit harder now that the light has come on? If so, then the trans is in 'cripple mode', and it's not good to drive it an extended period of time that way. You might want to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes(this will reset the codes), and then reconnect. See if the light comes back on. I've had this problem on my '95 a couple of times and resetting it keeps the light off for months. However, when my light comes on, pulling the codes doesn't reveal anything. So your case may be different since you are getting codes.
