The other day I put a new exhaust on my old 300ci inline six because the exhaust was starting to fume up my truck. I put a catalatic converter and a sound engineered flowtech muffler on it and now I have no sound at all. I can't even hear my engine run anymore. I need to know how to make it louder. Has anyone tried to make a i6 loud as a v8 and what should I do?
I had the same problem on my Bronco. I put a turbo muffler on it to get a better (louder) sound, and it was dead quiet. Two things you can try, 1.) get bigger pipes; at least 3". 2.) run a straight pipe with just the cat. I'd recomend the second option, it's what I did with my bronco (5.0L) and it worked great.
First off that catalytic converter muffles your sound. That alone will help make your truck louder. I ran with my 1984 F-150 5.0L with just a catalytic converter and it was relatively quite. Once I had my new exhaust system put on it complete with Flowmasters I asked the technician why my truck was so quiet with just the converter on and he said that the converter muffles the sound down. It's illegal in most states to run with out a catalytic converter but there are some shops that will leave it out if you ask. Also did you install headers on it or are you running with the original manifolds?
I agree with 1987LTDmasta in that you should bring your truck back to the shop that installed your exhaust system. If you did not already pay for a brand new catalytic converter I would cut it off. Then if you are able to buy some of headers for your truck go ahead and do so because that will definetely help your sound. If money is tight you can get a decent set of headers from Flowtech or Summit (which are Flowtech headers sold under the Summit name at a cheaper price). The headers for my 1979 F-150 cost me $80 (Summit) and just make sure to paint them with a 1200 degree paint or higher so that they don't peel and rust in time. They will probably eventually peel and rust anyway but nonetheless the sound will be much better than the manifolds. Now I do not know your current situation with money and all but if it were me in your place I would install headers, get rid of the catalytic converter and go with Flowmaster instead of Flowtech mufflers. Now you have a legitimate complaint with your system so if you go back to the shop see about switching the mufflers and getting a credit back for the converter. Anyway I hope this helps and all the other suggestions were really good too.
You can't run mufflers and cats and expect a 300 to be loud. I had one in my 1978. It first had a glass pack and was to quiet. So I got a y pipe and ran two shorter glasspacks. After that it was just pipe. It was loud but it ended just past the cab.
I ran my 84 though the manifold no exhaust just for the heck of it. It was not loud at all, I really don't think it's possible to make a 300 as loud as a V8.
It will not sound as good as a V8 but you can still make it sound nice and loud. It is possible to make it loud and a co-worker of my has a 1966 F-100 with a inline six and believe me it's got some good sound. Now granted it does not sound as good as my 1984 306 but nonetheless it still sounds good.
all you have to do is take the cat off and then put a flowmaster on it it sounds deep like a v8 trust me i had a 71 300 and i put a flow on and people thought it was a v8
i had an 84 4x4 bronco 2 automatic with a 2.8 v6 i took off the cat and welded my own flange on to a 40 series flowmaster and bolted it up it was so loud that you had to yell to talk to the passengers it sounded like a v8 too but it did not run like one it was slow although it sounded fast
I got a Flowmaster 40 on my 84, it sounds like a cammed V8 at idle. When you get on it, it sounds like a Cummins 5.9 diesel. Not loud but I like how it sounds.
