Gas mileage

I've found threads talking about what people are getting. I've found threads talking about the 34 gallon tank. But I haven't found anything comparing the computer mpg vs hand calculated mpg.

What are you guys finding? I've filled my tank 3 times now. So far it is reading about 1 mpg better on the computer than actual mileage. Fill up today, computer showed 16.1 mpg. Actually was 15.1.

This led me to thinking. If this is common for all of us, could it be from the fact how ford gives miles to empty yet leaves reserves? Or does the computer just suck?

this is my first ford with a computer telling me what the mileage is but i've had other brands that did the same

i've found them all to be liars and hand calculated always has come out to be less mpg

only have 500 miles on this one and it's telling me i'm getting about 15mpg so i'm afraid to plug it into a calculator as of yet!

Mine has 1366 miles on it and right now, it is averaging 14.4 MPG. That is from the truck computer. I haven't hand calculated it. I was going to wait until I had about 5,000 on it before I calculate it by hand. I also noticed when the gauge shows 1/2 tank it is only taking about 14 gallons to top it off.

I run a Trip 2 and reset at each fillup. I divide the fuel I pumped into the total miles on the trip. I have consistently hand calculated about .4 to .5 less MPG by hand than the computer.

I wish they had a way to calibrate the computer. I have that on my boat. The system computes the estimated MPG based on estimated fuel use. You can calibrate the fuel use by actual pumped fuel in the computer. You tweak it higher or lower to get closer to the actual amount of used fuel.

Would a Regular Cab XL 6.2 4x4 get better then a fully loaded Super Cab or Club Cab?
Thinking of trading a 13 F150 FX4 that is getting about 16 mpg on a Reg Cab and I'm worried I'm going to take a big hit on mpg.
Any ideas what I might expect?

Compare the weight of the 150 to 250/ 350 and what rear gears the light duty to heavy duty are running. I'm only guessing but if my 2012 with a cap carrying misc 400# in the bed can get 14-15 mpg @ 65-70 your not going to see a major drop.

It's disappointing to hear others have issues with computer also. Our '15 Explorer Sport is spot on. The computer is always correct to hand calculation

My last tank fill was 16.2 on the dash and 15.9 by my math skillz. I do fill that sucker to the brim though, right or wrong, so that may lower it a little.

Mine is consistently .5 - 1 mpg off. My older F-150 was always spot on, I'm not sure why we've taken a step backwards.

Smaller = lighter = (generally) better fuel economy, but I doubt the difference would be huge. Here's a recent FTE forum reference that may be useful.

If I had to guess and this is purely a guess - I would think they programmed all the systems without a way to tweek it for different rear ends and different tire sizes. Maybe a one size fits all issues.

Lighter trucks would do a bit better, but much of that depends on your driving style. On the highway weight is less important than wind resistance because most of your fuel is burned pushing the truck through the air. In the city it's the opposite, because most of your fuel is burned accelerating a heavy truck to road speed after braking to a stop.

In most cases you'll see a significant reduction in fuel economy going to a Super Duty from an F150, even with the same engine.

I've been averaging 13.9 mpg, but my commute is 4.5 miles of side roads with two 8% grades and its all stop and go. So, actually, I'm impressed. Only have a couple hundred miles on the truck so far. Towing out to Ocotillo Wells next weekend, excited to see what the mpg is with my 11,000 lbs toy hauler. My Tundra got a sweet 3.5 mpg towing that pig up the 8% grade lol.
