Hi, this is my first post. I have read many posts and have found a couple that are similar to my problem. I have a 95 explorer XLT. While in park it shakes and revs on the verge of stalling. While in drive with the brake on it stalls when idling for longer than 30 seconds. I have to put it in neutral and rev the engine at a light so it won't stall. Other threads have mentioned the IAC valve. Are there any other culprits that would cause these problems. The catalytic converter was replaced a month ago.
It was happening before and the CAT was the solution. They said something about negative vacuum pressure. For a few months it seemed to have fixed the problem.
I took off the IAC valve and cleaned it with injector cleaner with a qtip. Now it doesn't rev on its own as much but it still stalls and now there is a loud hum. It sounds like a shop vac or a high pitched vacuum cleaner. Any suggestions. I don't see any hoses off.
How is your EGR system. My '95 was stalling just like yours (only when the temp was warm oustide).
I replaced the DPFE sensor (it took just under 5 minutes, it would have been quicker bu I couldn't find a screwdriver). it cleared it right up
I going to look back into my records. I know the EGR valve has been replaced but I'm not sure about the sensor. Would this cause the loud hum, as well or is that all together another problem. Also ( forgive my description, I'm new at this) on the passenger side near the back wheel there is a small suitcase sized component that looks like it is part of the exhaust system. it is making a rattle sound when the explore is idling. Is this too all together a new problem or are they all related?
I forgot to add that when I had the IAC valve off and was cleaning it, I noticed that the valve wasn't spring loaded. I could move it but it just stayed in the same position. Is this how it should work or is it supposed to be spring loaded?
I noticed when i change the wife's IAC the old one had a spring
in side and the black plastic cap outside . NOw the new one had
no spring inside and a metal cap instead of the plastic cap outside
So I do not think it makes a difference. Wife's X is running perfect.
Yes, you are right. So that means I need a new one or can it be "unstuck"? I know that is probably a dumb question but I'm new at this. Thanks for the help.
I replaced the IAC valve yesterday and so far so good: no stalling or revving up and down. Thanks for all the help. This is my first experience at this site and it has been a great experience.
Well it appears that all is not well in happy land. Although my explorer has not stalled near as much as it was before it has now stalled twice since installing the new IAC valve. There is a rattle coming from under the vehicle on the passenger side that sounds like it is in the exhaust sytem and the exhaust smells rich. Any ideas?
