help

dec 1988 constructed registered 1989 3/4 ton F250 diesel.

Hard starting.
Billows of white smoke from exhaust throughou ten minute idle.
Rough idle on forward tank.
Even rougher idle on rear tank.
Engine runs unassisted.

Gauges read the following:

Water temperature past hot, buried.
Release of radiator cap produced little pressure release, coolant luke warm.

Oil temperature gauge read normal.
oil on dip stick luke wrm to touch.
Engine block warm to touch warmer than oil and radiator coolant.

Please can someone diagnose the problem?

Yeah...the temp guage is bad? Sorry...couldn't resist.

Is this your truck? Does it use oil? Does the coolant level drop?
Have the injectors been checked/changed? Has there been a compression test done? Has the truck been sitting for awhile?

Sorry...but there's some pretty clever folks here, they'll just need a lot more info than what you have so far.

Make sure the tanks are filled with good clean fuel, add some diesel fuel additive, maybe do a fuel filter change, check all glowplugs and maybe pull the injectors and have them tested by a diesel shop. Compression test might be a good idea, too.

Sounds like you have a bad guage or sending unit and the fuel filter needs replacing. I would check the filters before getting to deep into the technical stuff. Some injector cleaner would probably help.

Thanks for suggestions. Yes the truck has been sitting for a year.
Long story .......................but my teenage son was abusing the truck( four wheeling) so it was parked.

Yes it is my truck. I haul hay and a two horse Gooseneck trailer.

I need to pay closer attention to see if coolant level drops.
Nothing done to the injectors since I bought the TK used 50K miles ago.
No compression test done since I've had it.
Is there an easy way to drain the tanks? I examined the front tank yesterday. No drain plug is easily apparent as the whole thing is protected with a long heavy skid plate well secured (bolted not welded) to the frame.

I will try your suggestions.

Thank you again,

Wlad

You said the radiator was not hot but the engine was hot. Could be a stuck thermostat.
