I have an 08 f250 powerstroke and at idle it clicks or taps is this normal I know about the tsb but this seems to loud to be normal. The truck has no codes and only has 70k on it.
yes I hear it. I just been down this road and here are my thoughts.
a. I do here the tapping noise. is it a rocker, is it a lifter, is it a bent push rod...hard to say.
b. I also here the intake thumping......usally associated with a valve drive train issue.
Im wondering if the sound is being masked by 15W40 oil....the noise could be more detailed if you run 5w40 oil.
why am I not saying its and injector problem.....becuase of the thumping in the background...you only get that with a valve drive train problem and not an injector one.
so what are the risks....
a valve train problem at is worse on the inake side will cause your piston to vacum lock becuase its not getting enough intake air...and sometimes that cuases a shudder at around 40MPH.
a valve train problem at its worse on the exhuast side is more problematic becuase if the exhuast valves do not open enough, you could hydro lock the piston and bend a piston rod.
on my 6.4 the drivers side vavle cover was a heck of a lot easier than the pax side. I knew I had a valve train problem becuase of the tapping and thumping. when I took her appart..I found a broken rocker, a rocker with a dropped ball, at lease 4 worn to the metal rockers, and at least 4 more that were on their way. 1 push rod was bent to an extended s shape, 12 rods were bent at least 1/16th of an inch. my cost to fix was 800 bucks. ford wanted 7k and could not tell me when they could get to it.
I think you are on the early stages of the problem...so I dont think you have a dropped ball yet.
