So I picked up my 66 F100 w/ 352 FE engine about two weeks ago. I finally took it for a quick spin last night and had a few issues with the engine performance. The idle is sticking occasionally, and it seems to stumble occasionally under power. While poking around under the hood, we noticed that the dist. cap is loose and missing an o-ring seal.
I'm looking to know if this is the OEM distributor or if not, what I have. As you can see, it's quite rusty in there, i'm sure that's not helping too much either.
Also, in the 3rd pic below, there is a red wire with a elbow connector on it that goes to nothing. Any idea what this is for?
Are you sure it is red? I'm looking at your first picture where the wire goes past the coil and right at the lower edge of that picture the wire appears white from here.
Thanks Bill, that's definitely the part number, can make it out with enough wiggling of the mirror.
I can only assume the cap should not be flopping around as much as it is. Also, should I be worried about the rust in there, or is it just the contacts that I need be concerned with? Any recommendation on if I should pick up a whole new unit vs. just the the cap and rotor?
Dizzy has an ID number stamped on the curved section of the base...just below the cap, post what it is.
"Red" wire may be this: C0LF-12250-A .. Resistor Wire-Ignition Coil (Motorcraft DY-37) / Obsolete ~ Available NOS & from auto parts stores.
61.49" long / Color coded pink / 1.30-1.40 ohms resistance / #20 gauge wire // 1960/70 all FoMoCo vehicles.
ND, I think you are on to something. The wire on his coil looks like ordinary wire. That would account for the very burned looking points and rotor.
CJ06SLT you definitely need a resistor in the circuit.
I have a rebuilt dizzy from Napa with the pertronix, and their coil. It works very well. Do a search on this forum, and you'll find plenty of options and opinions.
