I have the Bilstein 5100's on mine. If you are planning on doing any suspension mods, hold off on shocks until you're sure about what you're doing. I did a spring swap and ended up getting 2" lift shocks for the front and a stock length one for the rear. I really like the ride that the Bilsteins give. Granted, my stock shocks were probably original at 140k when I changed them. I haven't compared them to the Monroe shocks you're looking for, but you generally get what you pay for when it comes to most parts, and shocks aren't really an exception to that rule.
I noticed no change with a new SS shock... I would categorize that as a "win" though. A huge change would mean that I had let (PO actually) it go too long without replacement. Replacing items that are still working but towards the end of their life cycle is the best way to go about maintenance. Nicmike will agree I'm sure being a fellow aircraft mechanic
I think the hard part is knowing when parts are towards the end of their life cycle.
Pretty much impossible to tell on a lot of parts ESPECIALLY since things like wipers wear over time and you don't notice them being bad until you actually do replace them
