Looking for a bit of help. So I have finally gotten around to fixing up the doors and replacing older pieces. Problem is I am having difficulty removing the old messed up interior door handles; I took out the door plate at the bottom, reached up and noticed there are "L" shaped nuts that hold the handle on.
Given The fact that years of oxidation and semi stripped screw heads I am looking for a bit of advice on removing them.
Has anyone done this in the past that knows of an easy way?
On mine they are by a threaded set screw. Tiny little thing. From the inside of the truck cab not inside the door assembly. Needed an Allen key and patience.
The inside of the door assembly has the handle plate(don't know the real name for it but it's a triangular plate with the handle stub shaft). It's connected by a flat rod to the latch.
I may not understand exactly what you are asking. The handle assembly inside the door is attached by these flat screws on the door. The door handle assembly is held in by three of them.
You have to get the handle off before you remove the three screws. The handle doesn't fit thru the hole if you try that. My truck was so bad when I disassembled it, I pretty much just pried the handle off and had to repair the door a little.
I think he means the arm rest, not the door handles.
Lax, in this case you will likely have to cut the screw to remove them. I have used a small diameter round file inside of the door cavity - reach up inside and get the file under the small angle bracket and file the screw until you file all the way thru. I've been able to save the angle brackets and armrests without damaging the truck at all.
Shipwrecked thanks for the reply and your service! But TA is absolutely correct!! I typed this thread at about midnight so I think I was a bit burnt out already (brain neutral) so the thread should've been actually titled Arm Rest.
Not originally. Those are the replacement style of brackets not the original style. Someone replaced the arm rest brackets in your truck. I have both styles here.
Originally it would have also had long machine screws. Not lags. The Ford NOS replacements used a lag like you mentioned. These are Ford NOS but they never offered the original brackets and machine screws. They were only an assembly line item.

The bad part is these clips don't work with the original machine screws so you have to get some larger sized sheet metal screws to use with them. Not a biggie, just another thing.
They will get something that looks exactly like this. This is not original style - that's all I'm getting at.
You can see the screws here that Ford supplied with these newer style clips. The original "L" bracket was much simpler and only had threads for a machine screw, not a sheet metal screw.
I'll dig out an original in a little bit.
Lax would not be having a time undoing his if it had these sheet metal screws. They come apart much easier and rust doesn't affect then so much as the tight fit of the machine screws.
By chance another quick topic - does anyone know where I can pick up a set of the "rest" that the gas tank sits on? Mine are pretty rusted out and need to get them replaced.
