Sync 3 and Apple Car play
Sync 3 and Apple Car play
Thinking of trading in my '13 F350 Lariat for a '17 F350 XLT. I don't want the navigation, just the sync 3 option.
My question is, how well does Apple car play work with Sync 3?
Can you get turn by turn navigation on the screen with Apple Maps?

Yes, you have to plug your iPhone jinto the USB port by wire. It works well full screen, and 1/2 screen. When only blue tooth it will read you texts, when plugged it will send and receive all by Bluetooth commands. Very slick.
You have to configure it, but it's not very difficult...
To answer your question...Yes, apple maps works well with CarPlay in the '17 super duty.
Now, I'm going to give my (admittedly) unsolicited opinion....
I'm an IT (information technology) guy...it's my job and I love technology. I was very disappointed when my '15 GMC couldn't get car play and was very excited to have it in my new truck. I set it up immediately...
I've found it to be a big disappointment. This is no fault of Ford. It works exactly how it should in the truck, but using it pretty much disables everything else. CarPlay, in its current state, is a huge disappointment imo. I've disabled it in my truck after only 1 day. Apple maps has never been as accurate as google maps, so I just use that or the Ford navigation. Just my $.02
If you're use to using apple maps and want it on your main display, it will work nicely for you. As previously stated, though, you will have to use a USB connection. CarPlay does not work via Bluetooth, which is my preferred way of connecting my phone to the truck.
I will end this on a positive note....
The sync 3 system, compared to a '15 GMC Denali at least, is outstanding. It's fast, accurate, more reliable and more user friendly, imo. Is it perfect? No, but it's pretty close.

Thanks for the info....
I have nav on my current truck but find it to not be as accurate or convenient as Apple or google maps. Cant see spending the $500 on an option that I don't use.
Is it not possible to display google maps or waze on the screen?

I picked up my truck on Friday and took it for a big spin on Saturday. I had innocently plugged my iPhone in via USB. I remembered that I had an item to pick up an item in town and again somewhat innocently pressed the activate voice command button.
Siri: How can I help you?
Me: What time does "Acme hardware" close?
Siri: I have found two locations matching "Acme hardware". Which one to you want? (There are shown in the centre display.)
Me: The first one
Siri: "Acme hardware" closes at 5:00pm.
The map is now shown in the centre console.
Well that was easy! I didn't really look at the map as I knew where I was going. I tried out in the driveway a short time ago. It lots very promising indeed. I did not get navigation on my truck as would be just as happy to use a <$100 portable GPS unit. Looks like that is now Plan B.

Well, that's cool!
I've got Sync 3 voice control working with AM, FM, Sirius, and my iPod. Now I need to get my iPhone and CarPlay working.
Thanks!

So when you connect via USB it automatically connects Siri?
Siri works via bluetooth also, you don't need to connect your phone via USB. You do need to connect via USB if you intend to use Apple Car Play. I connect via bluetooth and use siri daily, just hit the voice command button on the steering wheel (may need to press it for a sec or two).
You have to configure it, but it's not very difficult...

Must be an IT guy thing, since I am also an IT guy and an Apple addict so I was very excited to try car play with the new sync integration. Have to say the features are really well integrated except I hate apple maps and cannot pick and choose which Nav system to use so I to have disabled car play (for now). I wish you could configure what features you want active in car play that way you could disable apple maps and use the much better car nav instead.
Just my .02 cents.

Low resolution maps compared to the Ford OEM Maps and it takes over the display.
I do like that hitting the voice button for a few seconds brings Siri alive. It's nice to ask her if there's a Home Depot nearby in a strange city and get voice response to choose from several.
Another feature which seems to work well is Ford OEM gps is the rerouting for current traffic.
The Ford OEM Nav is pretty sophisticated when compared to my 2015 Lexus and Nissan cars. I like the way Ford allows you you tell it address in one complete sentence like "123 hope street, Albany" With my other cars I must first enter city, wait, enter, street, wait then enter number and the select from screen suggestions
