Wouldn't be the first time I'm wrong, or the last!

You are correct that in 1966 all traces of the Mercury ID are gone except the exterior badging and the paperwork

The engine codes are sort of interesting. In 1965 they list them as follows

Gasoline
1 = Mercury 8 Cyl
4 = Ford 8 Cyl
5 = Mercury 6 Cyl
6 = Ford 6 Cyl

Diesel
7 = Mercury 6 Cyl
8 = Ford 6 Cyl

SQ = 6 Cyl. 300 C.I.D. (L.D.) - Service Code CEGY

I assume a Mercury engine just has a Mercury valve cover on an otherwise Ford engine, but just a hunch.

JJ = Rangoon Red paint. Looks like a hint of it still near the warranty plate.

Chad: I could be wrong (and I'm sure someone will tell me so if that's the case), but the only vintage FOMOCO engine's I've seen with Mercury on them were the early to mid sixties FE Roundtop, the FE Pentroof ones, and some Y blocks.......but I have never seen a 300 with a Mercury valve cover?

Mercury FE "Roundtops"

FE Pentroof

Mercury Y block

Maybe they put a different paper sticker on the valve cover? Doesn't matter.

I don't think there's any difference in engines whatsoever. It's just that in Canada with their ID plates they are more specific to labelling things as to what they were. I do have a set of mercury valve covers for my FE engine which I will be installing just because...

Yah, I really like the Pentroof ones with the lightning bolts, I have two sets here, but one is actually rusted through on a portion that would have been vertical ON the engine, but I think they came off an engine that had been laying out in a pasture somewhere for a LONG time. Still, cool garage art, or perhaps I will cut out the script & lightning bolts and weld them into some Windsor VC's and put them on my 351W roller motor, just to see how many people we can confuse

1965 Mercury f100

Hello this is Jonathan I have a 1965 Mercury f100 stepside pickup. It has the front mercury letters on the grill also has the badges on the front fenders that read Mercury. And the keys read made in Ontario Canada. The plates (warranty plate) on drivers door reads made in Ontario Canada by the Ford motor company. But the title says it’s a Ford. So my question is is it a Ford or clone Mercury? Or how could I find out?

Look a little more on the Latch face of the left front door and see if you find the warranty plate. A drawing of what it should look like below.

Post a picture of the warranty plate if you get a chance. But, look at the Series code on it and if it starts with an M (like M100) then it's a Mercury and if it starts with an F (like F100) then it is a Ford.

1965 Mercury or Ford?

Truck is 1965 Mercury pickup stepside. Has the Mercury name in front and the Mercury badge on the quarter panel. The keys also read made in Ontario Canada. But the title reads Ford.

Here's how the warranty plate decodes. If you look up a few at post #16 you can see the M100 on that tag which indicates a Mercury, as well as the 5 as the first character on line #1 which decodes to a Mercury engine.

4991014L-217924A 15 UR 3.54:1
F100 114.8 5,000
SS-3M/D

4 - Ford 8 cylinder gasoline
99 - Styleside Pickup
10 - 100 Series
14 - 114.8 inch wheelbase
L - Left Hand Drive
217924 - 1965 model year
A - 6,000 lbs or less GVWR

15 - Red crush vinyl and red ladder pattern woven plastic - 81B Custom Cab
UR - Wimbledon White and Rangoon Red tu-tone paint
3.54:1 - rear axle ratio

F100 - Ford 100 Series
114.8 - wheelbase in inches
5,000 - lbs. gross vehicle weight rating

SS - 8 cyl. 352 C.I.D.
3-M/D - 3-speed medium duty transmission

Here's the legend of gasoline engine decodes for 1965

1 = Mercury 8 cyl.
4 = Ford 8 cyl.
5 = Mercury 6 cyl.
6 = Ford 6 cyl.
