1966 Mercury original truck? VIN decode

Hi, another beauty of a truck showed up here on Vancouver Island.
Ad description and pictures show a quite original M100, but...

http://www.usedvictoria.com/classifi...ickup_29172602

I am skeptical about the VIN tag.

Is this a Mercury or just another Ford in disguise?

In 1966 both the Ford and Mercury trucks used the same Warranty Plate - that's not it in the pictures. If that is in the location of the Warranty Plate then I'd saw, judging by the fact that tag has been fooled with - that something would be amiss.

Look a little more on the Latch face of the left front door and see if you find the warranty plate. A drawing of what it should look like below.

Mercury trucks in 1966 would have the tag which says "Made in Canada" in the upper right corner. See the drawing. That odd tag in your picture says "Made in U.S.A."

Something doesn't seem right.

The BC government-issued ownership document will correctly describe the truck. That document can't be faked. What does it say?

Neither, it's from a 1953 Ford convertible!

Something smells and it ain't hay.

This is not the correct Warranty Plate for any year truck! This is from a car, because BODY 76B is a convertible!

I cannot decode this plate (EDIT-see post # 7 for decode), but below "Made is USA" is the prefix BA which is a 1952 Ford car part number prefix.

Truck pictured in ad has a 1966 grille. 1966/68 Ford & Merc trucks assembled in Canada use the same 11 digit VIN, Warranty Plate and codes stamped thereon as US trucks.

Edit 1st 4 digits of the VIN: B3RC: B = 239 cid flathead V8 / 3 = 1953 / R = Richmond CA Assembly Plant / C = Convertible.

Obviously the wrong plate for this or any truck.

My 1966 Mercury m100 has 2 wheel drive as the model not m or f100 on the bc title wondering if that is normal. My fords all have F100 F250, or f350 seemed odd to me. I'm sure it was just who ever wrote it way back when. Curious to hear what others titles say.

My registration from a truck 20 years ago that I still have the papers for says 1966 Mercury 2wh dr and also shows it as a Canadian import. This is because all vehicles born in Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 come with Ontario registration as a business requirement. If the vehicle is sold new outside of Ontario that province or territory has to import it.

I maintain that '65-'68 Merc trucks didn't have the "M" prefix in the model descriptor as the pre-'65 trucks did (eg M100, M700), although RMM disagrees with me. My '66 Merc CS is described as "Mercury 250", my buddy's Canadian built '66 Ford CS is described as "Ford F250". Both trucks are registered in British Columbia on identical documents. However, if you look at the VIN on a '65-'66 Merc truck you will see that it starts F10, F25, etc.

That is some good info thank you 6t6merc I was under the impression that it wasn't till 66 That the m was dropped from the data tag. I have a 63 merc parts truck / yard art it actually has M-F100 would have thought it would just be M100. Also have a Merc 350 and it is registered like you describe as a mercury 350. That is why I thought it was odd my m100 was registered as a mercury 2 whldr.

6t6merc has stirred the pot a bit. I disagree with the 65 model year only. Here is the warranty plate of a 1965 Mercury M100 longbox Flareside made in Canada of course. Yes it has a 300 big 6 and twin I beam so its not a '64

1966/68 Ford & Mercury Trucks assembled in Canada use the same 11 digit VIN & Warranty Plate, codes stamped thereon as US trucks.

1965 Ford & Mercury Trucks assembled in Canada use a different VIN, Plate and codes than US trucks, as do previous years.

VIN from pic in post #14: 5831028L-233877A

5 = 6 Cylinder Engine.

83 = Flareside Pickup.

10 = 100 Series.

28 = 128.8" wheelbase (commonly referred to as 129").

L = Left Hand Drive.

233877 = 1965 Numerical Sequence of Assembly.

A = 3,600-5,600 lbs. GVWR
