I just "impulse bought" a 1989 Ford XL 7.3 diesel for pulling my horses.
I have never owned a diesel, and I'm getting mixed messages on this forum about the 7.3.
This truck is 5 speed with cruise, cloth seats, power steering, a/c, cassette, bedliner and running boards. It has what appears to be 168000 miles, although the odometer reads 68,000. It is so tight and clean, I'm certain it doesn't have 268,000.
I bought it for $4600 with the towing package installed.
Is that a decent price for one in super clean condition? The engine sounds terrific, no rattles or smoke/smell.
What can I expect as far as maintenence & possible trouble?
Also, does anyone know if those are "premium" wheels or "alloys"?
Nice looking truck there! The first thing I'd do if I were you is go to Blackstone labs and request an oil sample kit. When it comes take a sample and send it in. They can tell you a lot about any problems that may be developing in the engine. I'd also go to your local International dealer or to DIS and get some Fleetguard coolant test strips and some FW-16 additive. Follow the instructions with the strips to sheck the level of SCA's in your coolant and top off with FW-16 as needed. The additive is to provide protection against cavitation, which you can read all about by searching the archives here.
