Oil filter cap

just a quick question

I was told that 03-early 04 uses a different oil filter cap and that if the wrong cap (04.5-07) is used it makes the oil bypass the filter somehow?!

this didn't make a lot of sense to me and I've researched part numbers which are identical. Can anyone offer any input on this?

6 liters are all the same. What you might have heard is that some filter manufactures packaged a cap with their filters to get around buying patent rights to manufacture sell repalcement filters. I have no idea how you can tell if a truck has the origional or a counterfit cap.

The wrong cap and filter may not close the bypass valve, which would allow it to bypass the filter. The OEM cap is shorter than most of the aftermarket caps.

What he said!!

3C3Z-6766 CA is the part # it should be stamped inside the cap. If you're not sure. For 20 bucks you can get a new one from the dealer!!

I would NOT buy a Dorman one either!!!

An OEM filter inside of an aftermarket oil filter cap that is taller than the OEM cap, could possibly leave the Oil filter drain valve open and the motor might not be able to make enough oil pressure to actually start the motor.

In the same situation, where the Oil filter is shorter length than the Oil filter cap is designed for, the oil flow could easily bypass the Oil filter media as there would not be a seal on the media.

That scenario is all too common, unfortunately. Good thing you caught it and know what to do about it.
