There has been some sort of side boxes on my '78 since it was new. I feel like they are very practical because it's easy to access everything in them, and it doesn't limit the space in the bed. The problem I have is that they just aren't very stylish at 4' long. I also don't care for diamond plate.
I need to have tool boxes, but I want to improve the look of my truck. I will eventually be repainting. Wheel well boxes look like a good option. Any suggestions?
The problem with stuff behind the seat is that I get easily annoyed with rattles and squeaks.
I hear ya. I've got a tool kit behind my seat, and it's constantly making noise. I've learned to live with it, simply because I would rather have it than not have it.
They used to call those "porkchop" boxes, I like them because, like you said, they're deep, very accessible, and you still have an 8' bed for sheets of plywood, bikes, etc. I have craigslist Deltas in 1, and some small local-type manufacturer in another. They sit down level-ish with the box rail, maybe an inch above for the lid, so they clear a gooseneck nice. Biggest problem with them is they never "fit" right - most of 'em are short, made to fit behind the wheelwells with a cross-box on the front, so they're a little small and leave a dead space underneath and ahead of the well.....
These are a little limited on space, but, they don't take up much space. The swing out to access. I have found it opens a little ways and I can retrieve cargo straps without swinging it. I have a tool bag(all basic hand tools), small air compressor, very long jumper cables, 4 cargo straps and still have a bit of room.
