Removing engine - other maintenance?

I am gearing up to pull the engine on my Excursion to fix a leaking oil pan. What other things should be done or are much easier done with the engine out?

The only extra thing I'm planning on definitely doing is the Dorman bellowed up pipes and a new dipstick. I'm also going to do a coolant flush.

The truck came from up North and has some rust. I thought that may be important info in case northern trucks are more prone to needing other things replaced.

Engine wise, make sure you replace every single seal on the engine you will be glad you did. POR -15 everything in the engine bay, and also the oil pan.

Sorry for being a novice, but I want to plan this out and make sure I have everything. What all would be included in that list of seals/gaskets I should replace?

Rear Main Seal?
Timing Cover?
HPOP gasket?
Oil cooler gasket?
Turbo gasket and orings?
Oil Cooler?
Water pump?
intake? exhaust manifolds?

Which ones would be a "must-do" and which ones are nice to have or can be done later with the engine back in?

I would advise you do the oil cooler for sure, glow plugs are easier when it's out, but it's not hard when it's in either. It's a good time to delete the EBPV with a new pedistool. rear main seals are very rare on these. Just remember any seals you replace ALWAYS use OEM!!

It has around 215k on it. I bought it a year ago, and know nothing about the prior maintenance. Someone has replaced the pan once, that's pretty much all I know.

Give me a call when you are ready (if doing this in Texas), and I'd be happy to help.

You will need this: "Mechanics Parts Cabinet" Combo repair kit for common Fuel and Oil repairs 99-03

for the o-rings mentioned above, and this for the oil cooler: Genuine Ford Oil Cooler Repair Kit with 2 Genuine Ford gaskets and 4 o-rings for the Ford 7.3 Diesel

Which options would you suggest for the "Mechanics Parts Cabinet" kit? Should I shoot for the extended kit? The serviceable plug sounds like a good idea.

I think my list is now:
1) Fel-Pro front timing seal kit from Rock Auto
2) The "Mechanics Parts Cabinet" kit from Guzzle
3) Oil cooler gasket from Guzzle
4) New dipstick - Dorman???
5) New dipstick flange and oring - Dorman???
6) TA31 Sealant for the pan from Amazon
7) Dorman up pipes from Amazon

Had I met you a couple months ago Mike, I would sure take you up on that offer! Unfortunately, I guess the plan is to do all this work about 6 weeks from now at my parents' house in Tennessee.

Serviceable plug and quick release hose removal tool are all you should need. I would go with new hoses if you still have the original design hoses on there. There have been some huge upgrades in durability made to the hoses since 2000. Also, at 17 years old, they need to be replaced.

Have Seen failures in dorman parts especially o rings with 6.0 coolers. Have never been impressed with anything dorman and with how relatively inexpensive that OEM parts are wouldn't think dorman.

I don't know about that.....Many Folks here have used Dorman Uppipes, UVCH harnesses, and some of their various Door switches with absolutely no issues. And basically, an O-ring is a O-ring, is a O-ring.....Most are made by Little Asian dudes anymore. So do your research....Some things definitely need to be OEM, others not so much..... Others will disagree....
