just purchased/work needed??

I got rid of my 2001 Expedition about a year ago. I miss it so My husband and I just purchased a 1999 Expedition today. It has been sitting for a while and we bought it as a project to become daily driver in a year or so when my current lease is up. We just drove it home and it was a ride.lol. It has the 4.6l in it. I recall my 01 having decent pick up this was not the case on this ride home. It was very sluggish. At a few points we thought it may stall. It was revving up to about 3k rpm and barely crawling. It also was quite shaky especially when idling. It does have an exhaust leak which is tbd of how big and extensive. We plan to put a whole new exhaust system on it so this will not be an issue. Other than changing plugs, wires, and all of the fluids what else would be necessary at this point? We have plans over the next year or so to really put some work into it but in order to make it up to par for now, what do you suggest?....... Also, the brake light came on while driving it home. There is no visible leak however, any ideas?? Thank you in advance for all of your input...

The brake light could be due to low fluid in the master cylinders reservoir. This can occur just because the pads are worn down.

An exhaust leak can certainly cause drivability issues, especially if it's before the O2 sensors. But the 4.6l is also a small engine. Did your previous Expo have the 5.4l?

You'll find the 4.6l in the Explorers and it's almost undersized there. Not to poo on your parade, but you'd probably be happier with another 5.4l instead.

Actually my previous one also had the 4.6l and I was impressed by the power it had (once I did a tune up). I will check the pads out today and when I checked the reservoir last night it was bone dry!... I am going to have to determine where the exhaust leak is sooner rather than later.

If brake fluid is dripping on the rotors it will cause the brakes to drag and sluggish performance.
