Can you get a donor truck?
You'll need several things. Zf transmission cross member. Manual brake / clutch pedal assembly. Steering wheel trim for where the shifter was. The blank plate for your gear shift indicator, and wiring. Is your truck 4x4 ?
I think the linkage is different for auto and manual, I might be wrong though
Dan...I have a 97 PSD w/ ZF5 that I'm restoring & would like to go auto w/ an E40D.
I'm willing to give up a little power for the convenience the auto gives me, in particular, when launching my boat on a steep ramp!
Short answer is, yes. That transmission will bolt right up to that engine. The long story is that there are some other things that will need to be changed, so having access to a parts truck makes it a lot easier. The swap is well documented here and many have been done successfully. It's most definitely doable, but having a parts donor nearby makes it a lot easier to get all the knicknacky stuff swapped over.
Yes i got a donor truck i brougth a 1997 powerstroke 2x4 just like my 350 dually my1992 have all the testarosa spoiler kit on and my 1997 is not a dually and it's in bad shape so i want to rebuilt my 1992 and planing to cut all the other one appart the 1997 is automatic whit a good transmission but i rather like a manuel for the highway and for the launch because the first and second gear have a high ration so it's slow on the go
Some told me that i need to change the pci because it won't take the swap to a manuel And some write that you can put a power ship the mod of a manuel transmission into the program
You can go either way. The easy thing is to swap the PCM if you have a manual parts truck. If not, there is a wiring change that you can make to allow the Auto PCM to be used with a manual transmission. More or less, you have to fool the PCM into not looking for the TRS (which tells the PCM what position the auto shift lever is in) - or some guys elect to just take the TRS off the auto transmission, set it to the neutral position, and wire tie it up under the truck somewhere. Not exactly what I'd recommend, but it works for some people.
Aside from that, to do the complete swap, you will need:
-Manual pedal assembly
-Clutch master and slave cylinders
-Manual PCM (or - as I have said you can rig the manual PCM to work - or get a chip burned for a manual)
-Manual Steering Column (to eliminate the auto shift lever)
-Manual Gauge Cluster (eliminates the auto shift position indicator)
-The manual transmission wiring harness (for reverse lights)
-The manual transmission crossmember
-Transmission
-Flywheel (suggest upgrading to a single piece unit if it hasn't been done already - the dual mass units are a ticking time bomb)
And I think that's about it, though I'm probably forgetting something. It sounds like a lot, and there are a lot of details to complete to do it right, but it's a very doable swap.
I'm doing the swap at the moment. I bought a 93 4x4 donor truck. Took everything I needed off and sold the rest. I plan on using my auto pcm and auto wiring harness I think I have it narrowed down to which wires I need to jump. Just waiting for my clutch and master/slave cylinder to come in.
So i'm going to be alrigth because i'm planing to put he powerstroke into my 1992 that already have the zf5 swap into it and i was planing to put a ship into my truck so the only problem i will have is whit the back ligth wiring because the automatic colum is not a problem for me i drive the truck like this since 2years. So i will rebuilt my 1992 and leave the zf5 into he truck and shift the engine, fuel tank and wiring and it should be fine whit the ship. That is correct
So you're looking to put a 1997 truck PSD ENGINE into your 1992 F250/F350 TRUCK that currently has an IDI and a ZF5? That's a completely different project and will involve a LOT more wiring.
Yes i'm doing a swap of engine into my old idi that why i brougth the 1997 to get all is wiring fuel thank engine. I'm planninig to change all the wiring off and change it to have all the powerstroke wiring and fuel system because i know it's not the same more fuel pressure into the powerstroke and the fuel tank are new on the truck. But by changing all the wiring engine and fuel system whit a new power ship whit the mauel program i should be good it's a lot of work but it's worth it i think
Yeah, that swap is doable as well, but it is a lot of work. You'll have to swap pretty much every shred of wiring in the truck to make it work properly (dash wiring, chassis wiring, engine compartment, etc.).
That is what i was planing to do. I was woundering if i could keep the zf5 in my truck or if i was stuck the original automatic tranny or if i have to find a new tranny for my truck. I thnk i did not ask my question in the good way
