Is this the right intake?

I'm at the junk yard hunting for a 5.0 upper intake to port to match my 5.8 lower. Is this the correct one?

Yes.. squareish runners means it is a 5.0 but.. the 5.8 lower is the part you will be porting.. not the 5.0 upper.

Thank you sir. I'll have to go back and get it, I didn't have a Torx with me that would work.

Is the 5.0 upper a worthwhile investment of time or would I be better off buying aftermarket? I've read about the Typhoon intake as an alternative to the Edelbrock, but since my goal is low end torque I'm not sure if the Typhoon is a good choice. Looks like it was made for a Mustang?

Is that an '86 intake? If I recall my '87 had the 5.0L cast into it.

The lower portion is the choke point in the stock 5.8 intake but it's not just the size of the ports but that shape too.. they are kinked too sharply so there is only so much you can do with it. Total runner length for the stock Ford intakes and the Eddy Performer and Typhoon are pretty much the same.. within an inch of each other so given the increase in airflow you get with an aftermarket intake torque output will increase as well. Besides, the cam, engine displacement, and cylinder head airflow are the primary factors determining an engines powerband, everything else including intake runner length just messages that a little.. same way exhaust header tube length does. That is why a really short runner intake like one for a carb doesn't totally destroy low rpm power.

It is an early version, I thought the 5.0 and 5.8 lettering started in '89 but I could be wrong on that.

I think it is an '86, but don't recall for sure. I found another intake first, but it was broken at the center hole on the inside.

So an aftermarket would be an improvement over the 5.0/5.8 combo then. How would something like the Typhoon compare to the Truck Performer?

Yes

Its the same lower portion, the Eddy truck upper has super long runners.. 3-4" longer than stock so it's tuned to lower rpms... purposely designed to enhance the powerband of a stock motor from 0-3500rpm.

Dangit. I was hoping there was a less expensive option, but if the Truck Performer is the best choice for a tow rig/ torque project then I guess I'll wait a bit and pick one up.
