5.0 intakes?

How good of an intake are the 93 Cobra intakes? How do they compare to an HO or a truck or even an explorer intake? If anyone has any info or opinions, id love to hear.

I know that the 93 cobra intake is better than the HO without a doubt, but none of those sites gave any numbers on the truck intake. Can any one help me and give me any sort of comparison between the 93 Cobra and the truck?

There is one guy here that has dyno'd the 5.0 truck and HO intakes, and the truck intake actually made more HP. The Cobra/Explorer intake also makes more HP than the HO intake. All of the larger volume intakes make less low rpm TQ than the HO, however, including the truck intake. For general use with a stock or mildly upgraded 5.0 the HO intake will give the broadest powerband.

Mildly upgraded would be anything up to a naturally aspirated 5.0 with a HO equavilent cam or more with stock or GT40 heads. AFR heads and/or a blower changes everything, these parts will move serious air and the HO intake will be restrictive.

I would like some afr heads but i dont think i can afford that kind of fun lol, Im thinking ported E7's, long tube headers, 1.7 ratio roller rockers, with the HO cam. What would be your suggestion?

This is in a truck right? I suggest the HO intake with the Comp Cams 35-255-5 cam or the Crane I'm using if you have a flat tappet motor, or the Comp 35-349-8 if you have a roller. The porting, longtubes and rockers are good no matter what other parts you use.

Jrock99 put the full cobra package on his 5.0(GT40 heads, HO cam and Explorer intake), and while it screams up top, it's a dog under 3000rpm, potentially worse than stock, though the extra boost above 3000rpm may be skewing his perception. I have seen this a few times, guys always think bigger is better, but the 5.0 benefits from smaller intakes, it boosts low rpm torque and isn't a HP restriction until you get significantly better heads(ie: AFR).

yes, this is going in a Bronco, and its a roller moter, its an 88 HO. I have already put a new water pump and timing chain on this thing, its on a stand right now, i had planned on using the HO cam, but if it would be worth my while to get the Comp 35-349-8, than now is the time to do it. Is that what you suggest?

Yes. The HO cam is a very good all purpose grind, but there is better now. The cam above is a dual pattern cam where the HO is not, and the motor does benefit from holding the exhaust open a bit longer than the intake, given the restrictive nature of the exhaust ports in the E7 heads. This cam also has about all the lift the heads can take advantage of, where the HO leaves a bit on the table.

No. It's still a heavy truck so you need as much TQ as you can get, the MAF conversion will just make it even nicer to drive.

Ok, well i just buttoned up the front cover and all, and was wondering if it was worth it to tear it all apart, but it sounds like it is. If I were to go with some good heads later(afr) what intake would you use then? Im guessing not the HO, but maybe the cobra or the truck intake rather?

Cobra intake with AFR 165 is a good combo.. better to err on the small side with the 5.0 where low rpm power is desired. use 1.6 rockers with that cam, it's provides all the lift necessary for the existing motor.
