The Ultimate Tool Bag Build

So, I have started my tool bag build. I would like to compile everyone's thoughts and experiences for this little project.

Here are some pic's of what I have so far:

Of course I have a ton of tools in my garage, but this is to be my mobile bag that will always be stored in the truck. So I am not going to pull any of my tools from the garage. I will purchase every thing for this bag.

The Bag is ONLY 12" L by 8" W.

I currently have:

-- 3/8" ratchet set w/ 4mm-13mm ; 5/32"-3/8" sockets, 3" ext
-- Bright flashlight 300 lumens w/ magnet base
-- Pliers & cutters (see pic)
-- Zip ties (see pic)
-- Tire pressure gauge 100psi (see pic)
-- Electrical tape (see pic)
-- Tie Wire 18ga (see pic)
-- Electrical butt connectors blue (see pic)
-- 4port electrical connectors orange (see pic)
-- 60 pc bit set w/ torx up to T40, phillips, flat head, and allen heads (see pic)
-- Allen Wrench for fuel/water separator

I KNOW I NEED:
-- 12" ext for ratchet
-- Hose clamps for small to large hoses
-- Fuel Filter socket
-- Oil Filter socket

I know there is a lot more needed, but I need help with that (like what socket sizes for other part on the truck)

Please keep in mind the size of the bag when suggesting items.

So no breaker bars, crow bars, etc. Haha

This is not only for the engine bay, but also for the entire truck.

I am hoping this will be a fun topic, and for others to follow by when getting a 6oh and what to have on hand when traveling.

Thanks - Preston

First response...

How do you keep the McUltra cold?!?!

Done...

I like this Preston. I have a tool bag and box in my trailer when I go camping/riding, but I have not put anything together for my truck. I have AAA Premium with the 2x 200 mile tow and trailer tow, so I haven't really done one.

I probably should though. Gee...thanks Preston. Now I gotta go spend more money. Sheesh.....

Just Messin...

EDIT: Honestly I thought this thread was going to be about Cummins and Duramaxipad owners...

I would include a canvas roll of flex head gearwrenches up to 19mm. I have not found a decent souce for a sized canvas wrench roll... Been looking a long time. Gotta find someone with a decent sewing machine to make one...

I have done the loose wrenches in the bag and it is a pain to find the right one and you don't know if one is missing.

Putting it all in one bag makes it a challenge 😧

Those bits take up less space but I prefer individual drivers - they fit into tighter spaces and when you've finished the bits don't fall off when you touch a cable and disappear somewhere nasty.

I have a combination 1/4 and 1/2 socket set, everything from 5.5mm (lamp adjuster) all the way to 34mm. Might take up too much of your bag though.

Don't forget the OBD2 adapter if you're not permanently plugged in

You could check this out.
Amazon Amazon

I have a Craftsman set in a CLC wrench roll that works well. Also have another set that is Stanley (Proto) that I got from Grainger about 15 years ago, so don't know if they still have the set available.

I am think I need to get sockets up to 15/16".

Then I could also work on brakes if needed.

Maybe a pair of snap ring pliers too.

From my brake thread, I recall a 3/8 box end to bleed pressure off the caliper if one locks up. You may have that covered with your sockets. What about a line wrench for brake hoses and other sensors? I think the front drivers brake hose was 11mm - I'd assume the other hoses are the same.
I have RiffRaff boot clamps and they take a 7/16". Down by the intercooler takes a healthy dose of extensions.
Good thread - my toolbox will be in next week and I'd like to outfit it to handle common roadside problems.

Good call on the boot clamps, they need to be deep sockets, I believe.

I think having the 3" ext and getting a 12" ext will be good.

Ive been slowly but surely building my inventory in my truck bed tool box. Contains everything youve said so far along with some unnecessary, but useful stuff.
30' 15 ton tow strap, couple sets of leather gloves (nice for tire changes), magnetic trailer lights because we all know those "waterproof" boat trailer lights arent really waterproof , 2 sets of jumper cables, couple sizeable chunks of 2x4's, 5 gal bucket, maglight flashlight, couple cans of penetrating oil/wd-40/dry silicone/lithium grease...

I know its not all going to fit in a small bag, but maybe someday youll get some more space to put crap

I have plenty of space, but I am kind of a neat freak, just a little. Plus, I don't want my buddies making fun of my "Ford preparedness" too much.

Haha

Good point on the WD-40, and gloves. I am going to put some pairs of nitrile/latex gloves.

Here at my Grandma's and she let me go through what was left of my Grandpa's tools. I was able to get alot goodies!!!!

Quite a few of the tools will probably be put to use in this bag. Saving me some dough.

Im a mix between a neat freak and a pack rat If I have room for it, it goes in the box... Ive organized it quite well with milk crates and buckets. Still slides around a bit when I take a hard turn, but I figure that proves im going fast enough to have fun

I recently started carrying X-treme silicon rubber self fusing tape. Really cool stuff. Wind it on and it bonds to itself. Several months ago I noticed a small tear in a cv boot on my Mazda. Cleaned with alcohol and wrapped. Still clean today.I believe you could wrap a radiator hose in a pinch.

I have electrical tape in the bag for multi use, but this sounds like good stuff that you mentioned.

Can you reference a site for it or copy and paste it here.

Thanks - Preston
