Ill try advancing it more. how many degrees of advance is normal for the ford 360? this motor is all stock except for carburetor and distributor. 4bbl carburetor instead of the 2bbl.
That might work, but assuming the distributor is still "off a tooth", more likely you'll run out of room to advance the timing far enough, the distributor body won't be able to turn far enough. Use a light, try 12° BTDC.
I should have enough room to adjust the timing and if I need to ill move the spark plug wires around to give it more room to advance. I won't be able to try anything until Saturday because I will be out of town until then. When I get back ill try 12 degrees and let you know how that goes. Anyway thanks for all the help!
Update: Advanced it to where it runs better but I dont know what degree it is at because my buddy with the timing light was not available this weekend. I think it still needs to be advanced more. It idles ok and starts pretty good just when you first start it you need to keep your foot on the gas to keep it running otherwise it will die. Can I advance it until it start to have carburetor detonation and then retard it?

Minor nitpick: The carburetor doesn't have detonation, this occurs in the cylinders. You can try advancing the distributor till it "pings" or has engine knock, and then back off a bit. It doesn't take much movement to make big changes in engine timing. About the width of a pencil line is equal 2°. Best put a timing light on it and see what's what when you get a chance.
Take the time to get the carburetor tuned and adjusted correctly, the float level and idle mixture screws. Makes a big difference in how it runs.
Alright I have set fairly good now. Ill have to wait until my buddy is available with his timing light. What is your idle speed? 800 to 1000? and what is it in gear?
