Any ideas on the front brakes on 77 F250 4x4 brakes? I just did a brake job (pads and calipers) and now after a short jaunt at double nickles, the wheels are hotter than the hubs of hell, well too hot to put yer hands on the hubs, anyway. (Havent been to hell yet - got some friends there, though). Also, the telltale smell brake smoke. I pulled the calipers off and spun the hub, hub turns free until I start to tighten the two big caliper bolts down. The pads seem too thick, very little clearance. I cleaned the rails and the shim/spring thing, all seems to move easy. Does it take a while for the pads to 'seat'? Will all this heat go away with time or cause the front wheels to sieze up, pull hard to the left, go off the cliff and cause me to die at the bottom of Lake Roosevelt, then get a ticket for "Unintentional Ford Neglect"?? Jeff,
I had the same High temp problem on my new brake setup(76 F250 Axle). I used a heat gun to check temps, They were pretty high at first and then cooled down. Although I never got any burned pad smell, the 4wd hubs were so hot you couldn't touch them for very long.
Like I said they eventually cooled down to normal at around 50-100 miles. I did make all my trips short ones at first so that there was never too much heat all at once.
If this continues for you I would check everything again, to include your master cyl and pedal adjustment.
Highboy70, Thanks for the words of wisdom, I took Rusty out today for a quick trip downtown and hubs were warm, not hot and no brake smell. Hope it is "braking in", pun intended. I looked in the troubleshooting part of the book and it said that a faulty or plugged pressure relief valve it the master cyl could cause it not to retract. Hmmmm. When I really noticed it was after getting to work on morning, 15 miles at highway speed. Since then, I have replaced the calipers, I noticed the old ones had rust (go figure) around the pistons, so maybe they wouldn't retract all the way. I heading north to go grouse hunting tuesday so I hope this problem is behind me. My mate at work says that his buddy had same problem and front wheel locked up, sprindle froze solid, then the entire wheel sheared off. Sort of humorous unless it happens to you. Thanks again, Jeff
