460 engine identification

hey i am new in here and i am in desperate need of some assistance. I can't seem to find what kind of engine I have all I know is that it looks to be a big block. a friend gave it to me for free and i wanted to know what it is.

I found a number on the left side rear of the engine it reads as follows: D8TE AB

Please I would greatly appreciate any and all help with this dillema...

I can't answer your question, but since you are new here...

1. Big block is a chevy term. It isn't relevant at this site.
2. Just because it looks big, doesn't mean its big -
It is common for a guy to say he has a 460, and in reality he had a 351 or a 400. Or guys refer to the 351 and 400 as big blocks for example.
3. Can you be more specific? What kind of vehicle do you have? What year? If you can pull the vin# and coding data, perhaps you will learn a little more about your truck.

How many valve cover bolts?
7 or 8

8= 351M/400
7 = 429/460

Another is Thermostat housing.
Does it come out of the intake manifold or front of the block ?

I doubt it is a 460 but could be.

So....Because the first numbers D8TE >

you are talking about an engine part that was first designed for
78 Truck, plus, it has had a couple of change-ups (modifications) also.
