jumpy... loapy... Rompy... sensation... while driving
This problem is similar to the sensation of warped brake rotors when braking but this is not a braking issue.
You feel it in the seat and its a vertical sensation versus a horizontal. Sometimes it will present minimally when releasing the brake from a dead stop. it is not a speed dependent issue. Mostly I feel it when letting off the pedal and coasting. It is not localized to the front or rear axle but seems rather to be throughout the whole truck driveline...
I run thru a rear joint every 2 years or so. My effect is a vibration just off throttle. Then I know it's time.
The easy way to isolate your problem is to remove the rear shaft completely and lock in your hubs and run in four high and see if the vibe disappears. Index your driveshaft first so you know to replace it exact.
This will allow you to service the shaft/joints after you do isolate it.
Anyone ever do the drill and tap on the drive shaft in order to grease the splines easier? I always have such a difficult time pressing it back together.
Drive at walking speed on a smooth road.
You will get a kind of rocking feeling.
One of your tires is separating and has a lump on it.
You can really feel it at very low speed.
I highly suggest you do not drive the truck over 40 MPH until you have determined you do not have a bad u-joint, slip yoke or out of balance drive-shaft. Just get it rebuilt for insurance. The slip yoke will be hard to tell.
Mine had both. Noticeable vibration that increased with speed when I bought the truck. Figured I would get it fixed soon so no biggie... I drove it home and as soon as I was at highway speed for about 15 minutes the noise went away... because it cracked my ****ing tail-housing on the transmission. The vibration from the driveshaft started whipping the transfer case around and POP. The previous owner never took the truck on the freeway in the last few years so he would have never known. I have never seen anything like that... but I also have driven better quality vehicles my whole life (Toyota/Nissan).
A new tail-housing alone is $450 plus a ****-ton of work. My truck has been down for 2 weeks. My advice is pull your driveshaft and spend $350 to get it rebuilt now vs. dealing with what I have later...
