Hey guys! i just bought my first diesel truck, a 7.3 of course , got for a fair price ($5000). 2002 f350 4x4 crew cab, short bed. Any ways i drove it for like 2 weeks and left it at my uncles house so he can use to go to work. then 2 days later he calls me to tell me that the truck shut off while driving just like that. he tried turning it on a couple of times and it would just crank. he gave up and had it towed.
i have been looking through all powerstrokes forums and found some solutions like changing the CPS or the IPR. I just want to know if you guys have any other advices????
i just want that beast running again!!! haven't enjoyed it much
jajaj lesson learned that is the first thing im doing. it happen last saturday so i havent been able to check it out(10 hr drive to uncles house). i need to ask him about the tach moving.... and for sure there wasn't any white smoke. He would have said something but ill double check
I don't believe the Tach moves on my 02 when cranking?
I would go ahead and order a new CPS (OEM only, as with all sensors on these rigs, they don't like aftermarket stuff!) worse case he has a spare to keep in his glove box as a lot of us do, known problem with these trucks; plus it is a heck of a lot cheaper than a new IPR......
A scanner would be good to have and you'll want one anyhow. You can get a blue tooth or wifi OBD adapter fairly cheap and forescan lite is as cheap as it gets, that's a downloadable app.
The Tach does NOT move on a 2002 when cranking. A scanner will be the best bet.
Since it will crank, that is good. In addition to replacing the CPS, unplug the ICP sensor on the front of the Drivers side head. Not sure where you are located, but there might be an FTE brother close who has either Forscan (FORScan Home) or AE that can help you scan the truck.
With the great price of Forscan, I'd suggest you get that setup ASAP when owning the 7.3. Most new techs don't know how to work on our older rigs and just waste money by throwing parts at it.
Also verify that the fuse is good to the fuel bowl heater, it also powers the PCM - on the earlier models at least. IDK if it is the same for the later 7.3's or not.
What Hydro Man 17 said also. If the wait to start light doesn't come on then unplug the fuel bowl heater and replace the fuse. Leave it unplugged and start it up. Make sure you have fuel pressure also. If he put fuel in it, he also mitt of put gas in it.
Well if it was the fuse it's gotta blow sometime while the truck is running. I don't think that the heater is energized when it is shut off.
Just spit balling here.
Doesn't the 7.3 use oil pressure to activate the injectors? Could it be as easy as loss of oil pressure due to low oil level?? Maybe oil pan is starting to rot out?

Doesn't the fuel bowl heater only run in a very specific and small set of conditions? Plus if the truck had been running a little while (assuming here) the fuel and rest of the truck would be at least warm and the heater would have even less chance of being on?
Not disagreeing or saying you're wrong. Just spitballing too.......
To the OP, did the truck shut off like someone turned off the key? Or did it more sputter and die? What were the weather conditions at the time?
Rikster,
Valid question. I know that the AIH is that way. I just assumed it would be on all of the time. But you know how to break down the word assume right? *** u (&) me
