My 87f250 4x4 has the 4 speed +overdrive transmission and I was driving it yesterday to my friends house fine and dandy we went offroading then on the drive home it won't go into overdrive wats the problem I need help don't want to have to get a new tranny cause if I do I'm going over to a stick

First we need to know what transmission you have. Ford didn't put a 4 speed automatic in trucks until a year or two after yours.
How many miles?
Any other recent work done to it?
Any history of transmission problems in the past?
Is it possible that your transfer case is stuck in low range? You wouldn't be the first to make that mistake.

correction
I just did a slow take off and it only goes into 2 gears no it's not in 4l I just rebuilt the t case and have still been using the diff ranges since it happened idk what tranny it is exactly but it's the 14 bolt pan
