What engine does the 78 have? And your Cleveland engine was swapped in correct? Or are you from Australia?
The transfer case will bolt in and work, but the transfer case linkage lever may not, you will have to look that over. All 1/2 tons and 3/4 tons used the same transfer cases, so you are not beefing anything up there, it depends on what you are actually swapping in. Some of the transmissions where the same also. You have to know what you have, and what you are swapping in, not that it's 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton.

82 step side tranny
ok yes the cleveland was swapped in would i just be better off going with another 1/2 ton tranny and transfer case out like say an 86 and back my transfer case is bad so i was just going to do tranny and case it the old 3 speed with over drive i was thinking about just going with a newer 5 speed as well is that alot of work to put hydrolic behind the cleveland

If you want a 5 speed, then you will have to go hydraulic, and the hardest part is making the hole in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder. You will have to swap out the clutch pedal assembly(though some people have converted the manual linkage assemblies) and that's it.
With the 5 speeds they did have a lighter duty version in the f150's(it was made by Mazda I believe) and the heavier duty version 5 speed in the f250/350(the zf).
If you have a 4 speed with a overdrive 4th, then yes you might have a lighter duty tranny that only came in the f100/150's. But if you want to keep the overdrive, you will have to get one of the 5 speed trannies, all the other heavy duty 4 speeds that came in the f150/250/350 were all granny gears in 1st and 1 to 1 in 4th.
The c6 auto did not have overdrive, but was found in all the trucks. The AOD automatic did have overdrive, but it was a lighter duty tranny and was only found behind the 302, and I think possibly some of the 300 sixes.
If you just want to swap in a transfer case, just make sure you get the same type. They will all bolt up, even the ones in the 70's, but like said before there are minor differences in the linkage hook up. Unless you get the shifter and the linkage with whatever transfer case you get, then you could make it all work.
