First I have to thank a couple people. The first one to thank is Lee, he drove an unbelievable amount of miles to bring me the passengers side dually fender after my truck was backed into. I can't thank him enough, I couldn't find an oem fender anywhere, and he came through. Thanks again Lee, it is greatly appreciated!
Second I have to thank Kevin. He sent met the trim I put on the box to match the rest of the truck. It has been discontinued for a long time, and he sent me this for just the cost of shipping, over 2 years ago! It may have been even longer, it's been so long I don't even remember. He sent me them after I made it a dually. I finally got it painted, so it went on and I think looks real good. Thanks again Kevin!
I found the alcoa's on ebay. They aren't perfect, but look a lot better than the steel wheels with hubcaps. I did use the rear center covers that I had with the hubcaps, I like how they looked on there compared to without them. I bought all new metric chrome lug nuts too. The story with the metric is I bought new arrowcraft spacers for the rear tires, and they can't get 9/16 studs anymore, so use M14x1.5 thread studs like in the newer superduty trucks. As for the front, I needed 1/2 inch longer studs to work with my aluminum wheels, so I found some metric ones that had only .005 bigger knurl on them for an 08 superduty. They worked great. I couldn't suck them in with a nut, but I pulled the hubs off and pressed them in pretty easy.
I put diamond plate on the bed rails. My old srw box had them on when I bought it, and they kind of grew on me, so I put them on this one too. My bed rails weren't in perfect shape and I didn't want to spend a lot of money on the body work so I said to leave them and I'd put these on. The tailgate was one off of an older truck with the big chrome metal on it. My other 2 tailgates had some rust, but this one was perfect so the body guys used it and filled in the 10 holes for mounting the chrome. They did a great job. Topped it off with 6 new cooper tires and had to get 2 new motorcraft batteries too. I put mud flaps on the front to help stop rocks from being thrown on the dually fenders from the pretty aggressive tires.
I'm really happy how it turned out, so here's some pictures. They did a great job matching 20 year old paint.
I don't know why my first picture is big and the rest aren't.....Oh well, you can see it fine.
Holey moley that looks amazing! Man am I envious of your progress.
On them rear tires....being we have the same spacers...is the tire outside the fender? I know we have different tires but I'm really Hoping
the outside tire isn't way out like some I have seen. What do you think of them spacers?
Thanks Aaron! It's basically flush with the outside of the fender. It does stick out a little more than the steel wheels, about a half inch. The aluminum wheels have a different backspacing. I now have 2 inches between the tires instead of 1.5 like I had before. Those spacers are really nice. They are a lot better than the aluminum ones I had.
I like it a lot and love the visor and I don't mean to offend you at all but the bed thingy on the back not so much. is that a dana 60 on the front with some kind of adapter for the hubs?
Down right beautiful! I got lost in your explanation of the rear center caps? I still have the wheel covers that came with the OX, is it possible to somehow use part of them on the rear center hub? I'm guessing though that what your saying you used is different. Nice job and Lee, I agree, is unbelievable!
Thanks for the comments everyone. I appreciate it! I've spent a lot of time and money on this truck, but it's what I want so I'm fine with that. I didn't spend much on the paint job though. My estimate was for 2600 after the accident. I had to go through my insurance company to get money as the lady that hit me didn't have any insurance. I got 2100 after my deductible. The estimate included a new bumper and taillight which I didn't replace, and the total bill for the body work and paint was 2200. Very reasonable price for the work they did. I do have about 2200 in wheels, tires, adapters, studs, and lugnuts.
Curt, no offense taken. It was on the truck when I bought it in 2000, along with the lighted visor. I had to trim it to clear my trailer when I turn, otherwise it's the same as it was. Leaving it off isn't an option, as there are mounting holes in the cab now. Besides that, I do like it, after 17 years of me seeing it on there it looks bare with it off. As for the front axle, it's still a 50, just has the stock dually hubs on it. Someday I may put a 60 under it, but my 50 is in great shape, so I can't justify spending the money right now.
Glenn, the hubcaps I had on the steel wheels are 2 piece, with the center caps being a seperate piece. I just used the center piece on these wheels, the lugnuts hold it on. It looked better without the front ones on. I tried it both ways. I could use them as I have auto hubs, but liked it better without them.
