Engine seized... What should I do???

Hey everyone....

So here is the deal, my engine seized up on Thursday and I am not sure what to do. I just bought he truck six months ago and still owe money on the truck (have a 5 year loan). I spoke with Ford and they said that they can do the work for me and install a built engine from Ford for $8240. I am struggling with having to come up with that kind of cash. I have a couple of questions before i do anything:

Is that too much to pay for an engine?

Am I better off getting a salvaged engine and having someone do the work at a local shop?

or.... should I say F it and get a different car and sell this one for parts? If I did would it even be worth it?

lastly, I have thought about trading the truck in and rolling the leftover ($10,000) into another car, but the thought of having a large payment like that sounds awful.

Any thoughts, suggestions and help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Josh

What year and engine? Overall condition of the truck? Kinda doubting an EX with a seized engine could be worth 10K unless it was exceptional.

The most economical solution is to install a used engine. And don't do that at a Ford dealer unless you enjoy paying top dollar for the work.

2002 v10 triton. I have seen some used engines, I unfortunately dont have a mechanic that I work with and have been going to Ford. The condition of the truck is great, it only had 106,000 miles on it and no rust. Just had new brakes put on it and was in the process of getting a new suspension as well. Love the truck. But dont know if I can get over $8k to fix it.

I'm with Mark. Ask your neighbors and friends which independent garage they trust. It's time to build a relationship with a shop outside the Ford dealer.

First thing first.... your ford dealer is a poor choice of repair facilities for this job.
An Indapendant shop has much lower labor rates then a dealer. Dealers run as high as $185 an hour and many Indy shops are in the $85 an hour range.

Both Indy and dealer will have access to the same quality of remanufactured engines and parts.

A Motorcraft remanufactured long block runs about $3500 and you can get others for about $3000

A used take out motor can be found for between $400 and $1500

I'd expect to be able to find a independent shop that would be able to do the swap for between $1200 and $2000

Just an FYI...... the shop I use when I don't do my own work are all Ex Ford dealer mechanics, the owner is a ford master mechanic who stared his own shop after 30 years at a ford dealer. ( my ford dealer send me there when their guys could figure out my issue years ago )

Here's an option.

I am looking for an 4x4 X with a bad engine and a great RUST FREE/Damage free body for a cummins conversion. Let me know what you decide to do.

Otherwise a junkyard engine might do.

Adversely, I am willing to buy a v10X as above and sell the engine.

Go through LKQ they offer used motors and you can specify mileage. Labor should be around 7-10 hours and a good motor will cost about a grand. So for around $3 grand you have to X back.

New motor, not fixed by Ford is your best bet.

Has anyone on here used Jasper or Engine Guy? Their engines seem reasonably priced $3500-$4000, I dont want to get a junked or used engine (I know the ones I am looking at are rebuilds but you know what i mean) and I have seen some on ebay but I am hesitant to purchase something on ebay like this. I am waiting to hear back from a friend who knows a mechanic that owes him a favor and might do it fro free or a good bottle of bourbon and a case of beer!! waiting to hear about that, in the mean time I wanted to see if anyone has used either of the two suppliers. Thoughts?

Jasper is one of the best names in trannys... Ask Matt, he has a bit of knowledge with them IIRC although he rebuilt his (trans). If they are that good with something as hard to do as a tranny I'm sure an engine is cake to them.

I've installed a few jasper v10 engines. They seem to be fine. Come with a decent warranty. You'll still need a gasket kit and some other small items. Expect you'll have issues as I did with the coil packs.

7 to 10 hours to r&r a v10 isn't enough but if you can get it done for that labor time, that's great. This is easily a 16 hour job. If your x is really clean and with that low of miles, I'd fix it.
What happened to your engine exactly?
