alright, have a 1996 F-150 XL and last night I was driving in the rain and my ABS light came on then i decided to let my wife drive it to work this morning and she said the speedometer is not working... I have found out that the speed sensor and the ABS sensor are the same thing but it's a 4X4 and i have no idea what to look for or where... if somebody could tell me a little about what i'm getting into and where to get into it at that would be great... thanks
The shop manual shows a piece on the side of the tranny, same piece napa gave me when mine went bad. Only problem is I didn't have the piece. Mine is in the rear axle. Right at the top of the pumpkin, on bolt holding it in. Real easy fix, unless it falls apart like mine while removing it....
The shop manual for the 96 shows the vehicle speed/ABS sensor located on the rear axle pumpkin for both 2WD and 4WD. Mine is a 2WD so I cannot confirm this, but it makes perfect sense given the logic of how the PCM works. There is a speed sensor on the transfer case but it is described as used only to control the shifts in/out of 4L.
where is that sensor located on the pumpkin--is it on top.. and is it a plug or something you have to wrench at? because i think i've seen it before thanks
alright, so i have removed what i think to be my speed sensor... it's an average sized two-prong connector on the exposed part of it but inside it's about as big in diameter as a nickel and about an inch thick. when you look in the hole in my differential case you can see teeth to the gears... so i'm thinking this is it... it probably measures how fast the teeth move thus giving me speed in mph... can i test this part for continuity and it tell me if it's good or bad... thanks...
alright thank you very much... i think i'm gonna go get the part tomorrow... but since you were such a good help on that problem i have another scenario for you... I also have a 1995 Ranger XLT 2.3L 2wd... I put smaller, wider tires on it and now my speedo is way off and my odometer reads 70miles when i really have went 60... I've heard you can change something called a variable speed time constant or something like that... so is it in my instrument cluster... how do i change it... thanks
I just thought I would update everyone on the F-150 speedo/ABS problem... come to find out... I had dual exhaust installed on my truck a couple weeks ago and that's about the time the speedo stopped working... I replace the sensor and that didn't fix it so i took my ohm's meter to it and was determined to test the continuity of the wiring... when i did, I kind of jerked on the wires a bit to remove the plastic covering and both of the wires popped out of the covering and were cut in two... the cut was so clean that it looked like it was cut with a pair of dikes... and the sensor lies right below the drivers side exhaust pipe that was installed by the crappy-assed exhaust shop... and to top it off the pipe is 3 weeks old and is already COMPLETELY surface rusted... thanks for all your help though...
