AMP Research Powerstep OBS Install

Hey there FTE Crew!

I'm about to attempt an install of the AMP Research Powersteps on my 1996 Crew Cab OBS, and wanted to ask if anyone has a solid step by step write up on this?

Following.

I know of a couple writeups in the 73-79 Dentside forum... They were using the "old" chevy steps and fabricated brackets... Do you think they would be useful?

Thanks bud! I did a search and never saw that one. We're working on it, and should hopefully have the brackets complete today. Then comes the wiring. I've seen a write up on that before, but will have to track it down.

Brackets are done, primered, and painted. Now to figure out the wiring on this monster of a project. I've seen a few write-ups on this, but nothing clear and thorough.

I'm attempting to keep the factory look without adding any additional door pins to trigger each step when the designated door opens. I've seen where some additional relays need to be added to make this happen.

Since I'm no wiz on electrical wiring, does anyone have some detailed information on this?

you might be able to tie into the door light switch? If not, it wouldn't be too hard to drill a hole and install a momentary switch that is activated by the door like the light switch is.

Heck, you might be able to find an oem light switch and install it just below the existing one and use it for the steps.

Did you get a wiring harness for the steps themselves? Did it come with a "trigger" wire to activate the steps?

The specific steps that I'm using are the for the 1999-2007 GM truck. Which are the AMP steps recommended for the best fit for the Ford OBS crew Cab.

It did come with a wiring harness, controller, and there are "trigger" wires as well to activate the steps.

I've never put them on an OBS, but the only wiring you should need to do is constant power and ground and the trigger. I would think the trigger could be the cab light switches on each side. Should work the same way as my SD that runs to the door ajar light wiring.

Travis, is your SD setup smart enough to only deploy the step for the door that's opened? Or do they all go?

Yes, in theory, that's the way it works; but from what I've been told, the door switches are reversed polarity, and you also have to use relays to designate the proper side step to be deployed per sidedoor that is opened and closed. If not, then both steps will deploy when either side is opened or closed by itself

I'm familiar with some auto electrical, but this is not anything I have experience with.

If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it.

Not sure if this will work or help, but here's a link to the PSN forum that discusses this installation.

the SD only lowers whichever door is open, but those switches may be different. I would have to put a test light or volt meter on the OBS door switches to know what's going on with them. I've never honestly looked at the OBS switch wiring. If there's 2 wires, then it should be completing the circuit when the door opens. It could power up the switches for other doors when that happens and if that's the case, then it will be quite a bit more complex than my SD was. Wonder if i can find a wiring diagram for it.
