It's what $2.50 a gallon. That's $2.50 every 1000 miles. Why mess with making and storing it? How cheap do you think you you can produce it for?
You have a $70,000 truck and you want to save a half a penny a mile by making and storing your own DEF. You could probably save more money just pretending you have an egg under your fuel petal.
But lets hear you logic. Whats a 50 lb bag of Urea cost? Deionized water? your time to mix it. It's an oxidizer isn't it? I guess you could use your extra urea mixed with a little diesel fuel in a baggy to remove old stumps around the yard.
I agree, DEF is cheap, many fuel stations have a separate pump now, Walmart carries it, heck, go to the Volkswagen dealer, AdBlue is cheap and they'll be going through much much more of it now due to the emissions scandal they'll be giving the stuff away.

At the shops locally here in California its $5-10/gallon depending where you buy it.
Not to add to the rain falling in your parade, but isn't DEF about the cheapest fluid used by a SD? I would be more likely to try to save by driving more economically and consolidating trips. Gosh, next time you wanna eat out, don't. Eat at home and you've saved enough money to pay for a years worth of DEF.
I do applaud the OPs willingnesss to try new ideas and try to maximize his $$. One big kicker would be if the 50# of DEF has a shelf life that is shorter than the time you will require to use it.
Edit...I just saw you are paying $5-10 a gallon in California. It's much cheaper here in Texas. Maybe it makes sense there, with the higher prices. Good luck.
And I can get bulk deionized water at a local shop.
Anyone tried mixing it themselves? I think I'd just mix it in my 5 gallon jug I use for dirtbiking!
Mix your own DEF......DEF system goes to hell.... will not warranty because of non-spec DEF.......you pay......how cheap is that???
Buy your DEF at Wally World for $9.00 per 2.5 gal jug every couple thousand miles, is that expensive????
It takes 3 lbs of Urea and 3/4 of a gallon of distilled water to make one gallon of DEF. With S&H you're probably paying $1.00/lb for the Urea and say $0.75 for the distilled water. So your material cost is about $3.75 plus you've got to buy the container to store it in...I've seen Blue DEF recently for like $9.00 for 2.5 gallons so doubt this is worth the hassle. Most truck stops tend to be around $1.75 - $2.25 per gallon anyway.
Seriously? Mixing ones own DEF? You have a $60K+ truck and your trying to save $$$ this way. Sorry, don't mean to sound rude, but it just seems like a HUGE waste of time. Especially for such a SMALL return.
I don't think it's possible to make economical at any scale other than to become a product facility and have a retail market. That being said, if you're a prepper and want to keep the truck on the road after the zombies come, you can get RODI systems fairly cheap. I have one in my basement I use to make all the water for my salt water aquariums. Filters are pretty cheap for the gallons they can process. You WILL void your warranty though. So it's a horrible idea.
