I don't think it's possible to make economical at any scale other than to become a product facility and have a retail market. That being said, if you're a prepper and want to keep the truck on the road after the zombies come, you can get RODI systems fairly cheap. I have one in my basement I use to make all the water for my salt water aquariums. Filters are pretty cheap for the gallons they can process. You WILL void your warranty though. So it's a horrible idea.
And a giant farady cage so your truck works when the EMP goes off.

Can someone tell me where to go to find this $2.50/gal DEF? It seems over $5/gal here in the bay area.
I stopped buying DEF in the Jugs a year or so ago. I pull into one of my local fuel stops and pump DEF from the Pump. In particular there is a new Maverik C-Store close to me that has DEF at the pump, No magnet needed. Seems to be designed to sell DEF to pickup truck owners. But most of the truck stop type fuel stations have DEF at the pump, but they seem to need a magnet for the flow control. And most will loan you the Magnetic Ring if I just walk inside and ask to borrow one.
Since I can pump exactly what I need to top off the tank. I usually fill up the DEF while I'm getting diesel and I see it's below half full. Sometimes that's 1 gallon, Sometimes its 4 gallons, Depending on how long between fill ups and how much towing I've done.

The other potential mistake – which seems unthinkable but actually became problematic in Europe where SCR has been used for years – is the use of home brew DEF.
“In Europe, some guys thought they could make their own stuff,” de Sousa said. “They got a buildup of residue with non-API certified DEF. You get deposits and the catalyst is useless and you’re basically looking at a replacement cost of about $6,200 each.”
